Trade! Chicago -> Atlanta

*> The Chicago Blackhawks have made their cap clearing move final and no it does not involve Kris Versteeg or Patrick Sharp. The Stanley Cup Champions have traded playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager and prospect Akim Aliu to the Atlanta Thrashers for their 24th and 54th draft picks in this years entry draft plus prospect Jeremy Morin and Marty Reasoner. Remember the Thrashers have their own 1st rounder as well as they traded the Devils in which they acquire for Ilya Kovalchuk. Great trade for both parties.

Wow, although I like the trade for both teams, I'm stunned Chicago was able to translate a necessary salary dump into a 1st and 2nd round pick...

The Huet albatross still needs to be shed...

I like the balance on both sides of this trade, each should be happy with the returns. However, I almost feel like Atlanta did the Blackhawks a favour by allieviating their cap woes and still giving up a valuable first and second as well as a good prospect in Morin. I was hoping for a Chicago firesale but this trade really dampens the blow to the cup winning lineup. Atlanta should have been able to make this trade without giving up the second.

You want to talk about albatross, how about Campbell at 7.1 M? That's a ton of money for a #3-4 D-man.

Yah that is a great play by the Blackhawks but I like how the Thrashers have added defensive depth and a ton of grit. Akim Aliu looks to have some potential as well. We have to remember the Thrashers had an expendable 1st rounder so they're still going to have a should be NHLer. I would have liked to see the Thrashers keep their 2nd however that's a bit excessive.

From what I have seen there was a bit of a bidding war for Byfuglien so that might have been the case for the over pricing. Kudos to the Hawks for relieving most of their cap stress one shot.

Huet is an awful hit, especially since their going to lose their goaltending prospects because of it. Noones gunna bit on him and a buyout is a costly one.
