*-> Montreal has traded forward Maxim Lapierre to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Brett Festerling and a 5th round draft pick.
This is clearly a defenseman panic move as well as a body has to go now that Max Pacioretty has shown he's ready. I still don't like the move as now Montreal have a crowded blueline. Lapierre is also one of the few french born players left on the team.

Ice Scoopz: Friday Afternoon
*-> Brian Rolston successfully cleared reentry waivers and will continue to stay in Albany till he is dealt. Rolston is rumored to be very unhappy about the series of recent events and surprised he wasn't claimed but has told the New Jersey media he is willing to stick it out with the New Jersey and fill any role needed from him. Rolston is pushing a trade and hopes that the Devils will find a partner shortly. I'm kinda surprised he didn't get claimed at half price but then again Rolston said it best himself when he told the media he expects his salary detered many teams.
*-> The new Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster has told the Calgary media he still does not intend on trading team captain Jarome Iginla. Feaster will not ask him to waive his no trade clause and feels Iginla is an important part of the team. Iginla has noited he is aware of the rumors and he claims they don't bother him at all. This is old news but since the rumors are once again stirring over and over around the rumor world I figured this should silence those spreading them.

2011 World Juniors: 4 Days In
STUDS
Brayden Schenn - Canada - The younger brother of Luke Schenn has shown some serious offensive potential this tournament. I've been impressed with Schenn, I have to say he's even surprised me as I didn't expect him to be putting up phenomenal numbers. 12 points (6 - 6) in 3 games is hard to ignore. Although he does play on one of the two major contenders his US counterparts have put up only a quarter of the points he has.
Ryan Ellis - Canada - Ryan Ellis was expected to be one of Canada's top performers going in and he has not disappointed so far. The prototypical powerplay quarterback and offensive catalyst for the Canucks. His hockey sense is tremendous and clearly see's the play breaking down before the puck has even left his stick. There were major concerns about his play in his own end but I can see a drastic defensive improvement from the last time around as he no longer looks like an out of place forward on the backend.
Erik Gudbranson - Canada - The Orleans native has shown why the Florida Panthers tried so hard to try and sign him to their main roster. The big blueliner has the total package and has looked like Team Canada's best defenseman so far. Clearly capable of shutting down a top line or putting up numbers from the back end. Gudbranson is tied for the tournament lead with Brayden Schenn an impressive +8. He's also managed to rank 3rd in tournament scoring with 5 points in 3 games as he looks to be the most NHL ready of all this years tournaments participants.
Joonas Nattinen - Finland - The big Finn wasn't on many teams radars before the tournament began but the Montreal prospect steamrolled his way with a surging Team Finland. Nattinen has the size and physical abilities the Canadiens have dreamed about for years. Has unusual hitting abilities for a European born player as seen with his hit on Brock Nelson of the US who isn't shy himself of physical play. Not only can he hit with 3 goals in 3 games he's shown a little offensive upside as well. A major reason why the Finns have muscled their way into the next round.
Joni Ortio - Finland - The Calgary Flames may have a steal on their hands with Ortio. I've caught several glimpses of Ortio overseas and he's looked stellar. He has shown he has nerves of steal and stole the extra point away from the US and almost the win before he had a tough break with an untimely weak goal. Apart from the weak goal Ortio has played well for his club in all 3 games and currently boasts the best save percentage (94.59%) among goalies who have played more than one game this tournament. The Finnish goaltender factor is still producing.
Vladimir Tarasenko - Russia - Tarasenko makes the stud list because every Russian game I've watched so far this year in Buffalo he's been the only player that had me on the dge of my seat everytime he had the puck. He's truly an offensive talent that with some brief North American seasoning could be NHL ready soon. The Russians don't seam to have any jump or the ability create any chances till Tarasenko or his line gets into the play. His 1 point isn't good enough to put him in the top 23 point scorers but his numbers do not do his play justice. Great vision and has incredible hands, my only knock on Tarasenko to date is that he needs to shoot first pass later as his linemates have failed to capitalize on the presents he's given them.
Robin Lehner - Sweden - Although the Swedish net minder has only played one game so far splitting the first two games with partner Fredrik Petersson Wenzel, Lehner has impressed. Lehner appears to be the real deal as he shut down and shut out the high flying Russians. He didn't seam phased or even pestered by any of the Russians attacks and looked to be in full form despite lingering injury concerns. It's still early yet to declare Lehner the goalie of the tournament as he will face an even bigger test when he suits up against the Canadians on Friday afternoon.

Terrific offensive abilities along with a responsible defensive side. His +4 is among the highest ratings for the Swedes and currently has 3 points (1- 2) in 2 games. We'll have to wait a see if Lander will be able to produce against much tougher competition however.
DUDS
Phillip Grubauer - Germany - Grubauer was expected to be the back bone of the German squad but hasn't played up to his potential. The Kingston goalie has struggled to be a dominate force and has struggled to keep his team in games where they should be easily leading. Several soft and untimely goals have taken the sails out of his squad when a big save was need to spark his helpless team. Although the blame isn't sorely on Grubauer, he will be needed to improve his play otherwise Germany could find themselves relegated out of the tournament.
Nino Niederreiter - Switzerland - Yes I know it's only been 2 games in but I've expected a lot more from a player who barely got cut from an NHL roster. Mind you it was the New York Islanders but Nino was expected to be the drive and the offense behind his Swiss teamates. With 2 points in 2 games it's barely the magic many were expecting. There's still plenty of time left but if he doesn't turn it up against the Slovaks he and his countrymen could find themselves playing for only their dignity instead of playing for a medal.
Zach Kassian - Canada - Kassian is another big player this tournament I've expected big things out of but hasn't shown me much to impress. Kassian was being counted on to produce and make space on the top line but has seamed more like a hindrance to his line mates. Although he has 1 point in 2 games I expected him to be a driving force behind Canada's "lunch pail" squad. Bad penalty after bad penalty and almost blowing the game for the Canadians against the Russians with a lazy needless penalty. He's one of only 2 minus players on a high scoring Team Canada.

Great World Junior tournament so far out of Buffalo. This is my second favorite time of year next to Trade Deadline day of course and to be honest I look forward to the U20ks more than the Olympics funny enough. Its just something about these potential stars putting everything on the line for a medal. Watching these kids knowing that one day some of them will be the next generation of Crosbys, Kanes, Toews, Malkins and Ovechkins while others will fade into obscurity. Each year a new storyline emerges and legacys are made. I guess its the same to say for the Olympics but those are grown men with their paths already laid out, the Juniors are kids trying to carve out their paths. Later on tonight I'll post a few of the players I feel to watch and some of my observations from the tournament so far.

Trade! New York Islanders -> Montreal

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Afternoon
*-> TSN is reporting veteran Brian Rolston has been assigned to Albany of the AHL today. It appears Lou is going back on his previous statements and is preparing to place the veteran forward on re-entry waivers where he is expected to be claimed. It's said the Devils are sending a message to their players and hoping to clear some much needed cap space for any possible move in the near future by placing Rolston on rentry waivers. Several teams are interested if New Jersey picks up the tab. Were Kings were lited as a team interested till the recent trade for Marco Sturm as were the Blues before this mornings signing of Marek Svatos. Toronto has been mentioned since the start of the season as well. Buffalo is also in the mix it's said. Many are sayiong New Jersey and the Ottawa Senators have been talking about possibily replacing Jason Spezza till he returns from injury but the rumor is Jaime Langenbruner. Could it possibly be Rolston the Sens are looking at instead?

2011 World Junior Preview / Ice Scoopz Predictions
Here are my 2011 World Junior Predictions, remember this isn't based on the teams overall skill set level but the final standings based on the Group seedings and the tournament format.
1. United States
This was a hard call to make as I am Canadian but the US brings too much to the table this year. The US has 8 returning veterans to the tournament from their gold medal winning squad which will help greatly. The core of the team is impressive with many of their core players playing in higher levels of competition than many of their rivals with Nick Leddy, Jerry D'Amigo, and Kyle Palmieri playing in the AHL while Jeremy Morin was loaned from the roster of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Yanks forwards should be able to play at both ends of the rink. First round draft picks Nick Bjudstad, Charlie Coyle and Emerson Etem should provide an offensive punch while fellow 1st rounder Brock Nelson will bring the jam. The versatility of the American's forwards is the reason I give them the edge to the tournament. Not only are they high flying and offensive they play a solid system and play solid defensively. Speaking of defense, on the defensive side of things the Americans have a deadly backend featuring Derek Forbort, John Merrill, Justin Faulk and Nick Leddy who should be their goto guy this year and be one of their best producers. They have a nice blend of grit and skill which should benifit them greatly. Jack Campbell stole the tournament for the US last year and should provide the same solid goaltending this tournament. There's no reason for a decline in play and should be able to elevate his game for the occasion. If he goes down however the Americans could be in serious trouble with the untested Andy Iles as the backup. The American's have the total package this year and although they don't have the big names as they did in the past the core is solid and many of their players are highly touted prospects in the NHL. There really is no weakness except for the pressure on them to repeat as tournament champions but most likely the home turf advantage and crowd should motivate them to play.

2. Canada
It was extremely hard for me to rank the Canadians 2nd as I am from Canada but I the US just had a few more ups than my fellow countrymen. The Canadians could easily be the number one team in this tournament as they boast a potent offense and a deadly defense. However I'm not sold on this "lunch pail" blue collar style the coaches have been preaching but to not see Canada in the Gold medal game would be a major shock to almost everyone in the hockey world. It's next to impossible. This new style really doesn't make sense as the Canadians have plenty of offensive talent and skill to go around. Brett Connolly if he recovers from his concussion could be one of those individual talents that carries the red and white squad. Ryan Johansen is considered NHL ready by most and is one of the best two way players in junior hockey. Johansen should be one of the major players on the team. Louis Leblanc, Quinton Howden and Carter Ashton all have offensive capabilities while curtis Hamilton, Marcus Foligno and Zack Kassian should be the official "lunch pail" crew. I'm not sold at all on this style of play but I can see it working well against teams like Sweden and Russia. When it comes to a team thats not afraid to bite back like the States or if they get into a goal for goal game with a team with offensive punch it could be a problem. Their defense will be the focal point and one of their key strong points. Erik Gudbransen, Dylan Olsen and Jared Cowen will be the "rock" of stability on the backend. Gudbransen made the Florida Panther squad but was only sent back to Kingston because of contract issues. how many players in the World Junior Tournament can boast that? If Cowen returns to form, he should be eager to show that he's ready for the show as well. Junior stand out Ryan Ellis will be the teams offensive catalyst from the point and should provide most of the chances coming from the back. You can expect he'll log heavy minutes and provide leadership as the Nations captain. He'll also be joined by Calvin De Haan who is no slouch in ether department. In goal they will have yet another tournament where the duties will be flip flopped and they'll ride the hotter goaltender between Olivier Roy and Mark Visentin. Neither goalies have shown anything above average in the days leading up to the tournament so it's hard to say who will become the number one and if the experiment will be a success. It's always hard on a team and their goalies when no-one knows who the starting goalie will be and a decision is handed down game by game. Team Canada would be number one if it wasn't for the Americans home country advantage, deep roster, Canada's average goaltending, strange choice of style and lack of experience up front. Canada will be in the Gold medal game and will be in it to the end. Canada's defense is just too good for them not to be.

3. Sweden
The Swedes continue to year after year produce high caliber players and provide the world with entertaining World Junior squads, this year should be no different. The Swedes quite possibly have the best goaltender in the tournament in my opinion in Robin Lehner. If not best goalie then second best at worst. The Tres Kronor are coached extremely well and each year they continue to buy into the system. The only knock many can say about Team Sweden is that they cannot play the physical game their neighbors the Finns, and rivals in North America can bring to the table. Future first round draft pick Gabriel Landeskog should help change that this season as he brings a tough and gritty style to Buffalo this year. He's alos the only player other than Lehner to have experienced first hand the North American way so he will feature heavily in this teams drive to a medal. One half of the Klingberg brothers Carl will also be a major factor on Sweden. Anton Lander and the returning veterans will also help give this team some much needed experience. Their defensive core will be their biggest strength this year. The Swedes boast another deep talented defensive core as they seam to keep providing year after year. tough as nails Patrick Nemeth will provide the sandpaper while Tim Erixon and John Klingberg will provide the firepower. Possible top 5 draft pick Adam Larsson will also be present on the backend. As pointed out earlier I truly believe Robin Lehner is the best goalie in the tournament this year. If he can recover from his injuries while playing for the Binghamton Senators he should be able to carry the Swedes even if their offense sputters. In the end the Swedes are a deadly team and should contend for a medal if all goes as planned. The goaltending and defense will be their major strengths and if they can over achieve offensively they could win this tournament.

4. Russia
Individual talent and soft play are two of the Russian squads biggest problems. The Russians can't seam to always struggle mainly because many of their players are more concerned about putting up individual stats rather than put the teams stats first. Nikita Filatov's icing the puck trying to score an empty net goal in Ottawa is the perfect example. This year there isn't a superstar on the roster and the Russians have virtually chosen to ignore any of their prospects playing in North America. Stanislav Galiev and Ivan Telegin both were surprisingly left of the roster along with potential first round draft pick Vladislav Namestnikov. Kirill Kabanov and the Russian Federation's politics have kept him out of the lineup once again as well. Although no Malkin's or Ovechkin's are on the radar this year they do have Vladamir Tarasenko and Evgeni Kuznetsov. Tarasenko is highly under rated going into this tournament and is putting up numbers in the KHL playing against men. Many feel he is the most NHL ready among the many young prospects in this tournament. The Russian's won't have trouble putting the puck in the net when they get the chance but the physical play of the States and Canada should freeze their assets when it comes to chances. The backend of the Russian team is better than years before and Dmitri Orlov should be their goto guy once again. In net they have Igor Bobkov who should fare well having played the North American style of play with the London Knights. A big coaching change also should help the Russians with a more youth friendly coach in Valeri Bragin . All in all the Russians have no where to go but up after last years tournament but could find themselves in a similiar position again due to the Russian Federations politics keeping some of their more talented players off the roster. I can't see the Russians missing the medal rounds however.

5. Finland
Not many other people than myself have the Finns this high on the their lists but I feel the Finns have a decent team as well as an anything goes pool in Pool B. The Finns have just as much of a chance as the Germans, Slovaks and the Swiss so anything can happen. Finland is the only outside of North America to be able to play a heavy hitting physical style without sacrificing talent to do so. A major loss to the Suomi was the loss of star player Mikael Granlund but the Finns should be able to muster enough goals from Teemu Pilkkinen's play making and Joel Armia's offense. The Finns strength up front however isn't offense based but instead comes from their gritty play and determination. Their defensive style is also a key attribute and should be able to hold off the weaker competition from out scoring them. Montreal draft pick Jonas Nattinen is a heavy hitting defensive pillar of their squad. Their defense isn't laden with many big names or even a memorable name. Sami Vatanen and Tommi Kivisto will be the main players on the backend. Many have writting off the Fins goaltending but I've seen Joni Ortio in action and am convinced the Flames had a steal in 09. He could be a sleeper goaltender of the tournament ala Jaroslav Janus. The other netminder Sami Aittokallio is decent as well and the pair should split the round robin. The Finns are a long shot for anything but I feel their style of play could put them in the quarter finals over the other members of Group B. Their not the most talented but each member of the team meshes well and everyone of them have play the rugged shut down style play that could at least stall many of the pool rivals. If they can contain the offense and play spectacular defense they could surprise a few and squeak on to the next round.

6. Germany
The Germans find themselves in an easy group and could be the team to go on but it all depends on one man standing on his head and two men carrying the weight of a nation. Phillipp Grubauer will be their star once again and fellow Germans Tom Kuhnhackl and Tobias Rieder will follow suit. The success of the team rides heavily on those 3 individuals which is a lot of pressure but all 3 players should be able to elevate their games for the situation. 7 of the 21 players currently play in the CHL so the Germans should be accustomed to the North american tempo which should fair well for the Germans. On forward the Germans have Windsor Spitfire star Tom Kuhnhackl as he'll be expected to create most of the chances for the black, orange and yellow. Soon to be 2011 first round draft pick Tobias Rieder continues to impress and shouldn't disappoint offensively. Mirko Hofflin should also be another key figure to watch up front. The Germans can produce offense if given the chance but getting those chances will come harder for them than most. The German blueline is fairly weak and not experienced and only Konrad Abeltshauser stands out among the many. The key to the Germans having any success at all will be in one mans hands, Phillip Grubauer. Grubauer will see a lot of puck this tournament and it's a good thing since he's quite capable of standing on his head. If Grubauer falters however so will the rest of the Germans. Their success depends on it.

7. Czech Republic
I think the Czech Rep have a more skilled team than the Germans but due to the way the pools are setup I feel it would be impossible for the Czech's to advance, however they should beat the remaining competition in the relegation rounds. They have a decent squad but the days of the Czech's being a powerhouse is over and the cycle of life continues. The hockey program is struggling to pump out stars as it did in the past. This years crop is a better than last years however. The Czech will have a decent amount of offense and should have an alright defense but against a high powered offense they'll find trouble. Another worry for the Czechs is in net as neither of their goaltenders are spectacular. The Czech forward core features 8 CHL players so they should be able to take a bit more of the crash and bang style than their peers. The first line should feature the dynamic duo of Jakub Culek and Petr Straka best of friends and line mates for the Rimouski Oceanic. They'll provide most of the offense while Andrej Nestrasil and Martin Frk will fill the secondary role. Chillwack Bruins Roman Horak and Robin Sedlak should round the offense out. On the backend the Czech's took a major hit when star defenseman David Musil went down due to injury. The weight will spread out amongst an average defense corps. Adam Sedlak of the 67's could surprise many. As mentioned above they have a below average tandem in between the pipes. It's tough to even pick a starting goalie amongst Filip Novotny and Marek Mazanec. The tandem will have to put on a pretty impressive performance to contain mainly of the tough opponents in Group A. To make the medal round the Czech are going to have to way over achieve this year, it isn't impossible but likely wont happen. The only way is ff the Russians have a major break down and free fall from contention. The team has to rely on it's group of forwards and not on the defensive side of things because help won't be coming from there.

8. Switzerland
Many have high hopes for the Swiss and think they'll crack the top 6 but I'm not so sure. They easily could be one of the top teams in Pool B but I think they have a lot of questions to answer and too much depends on one player. If Nino Niederreiter steps up with his fellow Portland Winterhawk teamate Sven Bartschi they could make the top 6 but it will have to take some magic. The Swiss defense is full of holes, no pun intended and their goaltending is decent but not great. They should struggle against any teams with firepower. The offense consists of two players both Portland Winterhawks Nino Niederreiter who performed some World Junior magic last time around and close friend Sven Bartschi should provide some relief as well. The puck stops there however. The forwards are going to depend on a few lucky bounces and a lot of Christmas miracles. On defense the Swiss have Dominek Schlumpf to rely on. Plymouth Whaler Dario Trutmann could surprise a few watching but there isn't much back up after that. In net the Swiss have Benjamin Conz who should struggle seeing a lot of action. His back-up is HC Davos prospect Remo Giovannini. Overall the Swiss tend to overachieve but this seasons World Juniors they may need a bit more than that with most of the competition evening out after the big 4. Their group is an easy one so it is possible, Nino will have to be at the top of his game as well as every member of the roster for it to happen.

9. Slovakia
This years tournament won't feature a surging Team Slovakia. The upset of two years ago is still in our memories but most likely won't repeat again in the near future. It'll most likely be a tough tournament for the Slovaks as they lose most of they "miracle" team with Jaroslav Janus and Tomas Tatar out of the picture. The Slovaks still have Richard Panik and a decent forward group but it's still going to be an up hill battle for the team. The offense will be based around Richard Panik, he should get some support from Tomas Jurco and co. Andrej Kudrna has the potential to have a break out tournament and the Slovaks will need that extra spark to make an impact. As for the point, the Slovaks blueline is pretty thin. They'll bank on Martin Marincin being the offensive and defensive force behind the group. 3rd round draft pick Adam Janosik of the Tampa Bay Lightning returns to the squad this year as well and should provide a little help for Marincin. The rest of the defensive core is inexperienced and not likely to pack a punch. The goaltending could be a surprise factor and could be the difference in the Slovaks being relegated or not. Jaraj Holly has North American experience in Calgary with the Hitmen and if he surprises the whole squad may have a chance at overachieving. His backup Dominek Riecicky won't be much help behind him . An overachieving Slovak squad would be a plus but more than likely they'll play to their predicted ranking unless the team rallies and comes together as a unit once again it's possible but not likely.

10. Norway
Norway is lucky to be in this tournament and their experience should be well about getting World Junior experience. They'll be lucky if they don't get relegated let along make it to the next round. They lack depth and talent at all 3 positions and will struggle even against the bottom feeders in this tournament. Their forwards don't have the offensive capabilities nor the defensive capabilities to compete. Nicholas Weberg should be their best forward and player for the Norwegians. There defense isn't an above average core or even average while the goaltending isn't much better. Team Norway should just be happy to be there this year and build on the qualifying for the tournament and plan for the next.

1. United States
This was a hard call to make as I am Canadian but the US brings too much to the table this year. The US has 8 returning veterans to the tournament from their gold medal winning squad which will help greatly. The core of the team is impressive with many of their core players playing in higher levels of competition than many of their rivals with Nick Leddy, Jerry D'Amigo, and Kyle Palmieri playing in the AHL while Jeremy Morin was loaned from the roster of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Yanks forwards should be able to play at both ends of the rink. First round draft picks Nick Bjudstad, Charlie Coyle and Emerson Etem should provide an offensive punch while fellow 1st rounder Brock Nelson will bring the jam. The versatility of the American's forwards is the reason I give them the edge to the tournament. Not only are they high flying and offensive they play a solid system and play solid defensively. Speaking of defense, on the defensive side of things the Americans have a deadly backend featuring Derek Forbort, John Merrill, Justin Faulk and Nick Leddy who should be their goto guy this year and be one of their best producers. They have a nice blend of grit and skill which should benifit them greatly. Jack Campbell stole the tournament for the US last year and should provide the same solid goaltending this tournament. There's no reason for a decline in play and should be able to elevate his game for the occasion. If he goes down however the Americans could be in serious trouble with the untested Andy Iles as the backup. The American's have the total package this year and although they don't have the big names as they did in the past the core is solid and many of their players are highly touted prospects in the NHL. There really is no weakness except for the pressure on them to repeat as tournament champions but most likely the home turf advantage and crowd should motivate them to play.

2. Canada
It was extremely hard for me to rank the Canadians 2nd as I am from Canada but I the US just had a few more ups than my fellow countrymen. The Canadians could easily be the number one team in this tournament as they boast a potent offense and a deadly defense. However I'm not sold on this "lunch pail" blue collar style the coaches have been preaching but to not see Canada in the Gold medal game would be a major shock to almost everyone in the hockey world. It's next to impossible. This new style really doesn't make sense as the Canadians have plenty of offensive talent and skill to go around. Brett Connolly if he recovers from his concussion could be one of those individual talents that carries the red and white squad. Ryan Johansen is considered NHL ready by most and is one of the best two way players in junior hockey. Johansen should be one of the major players on the team. Louis Leblanc, Quinton Howden and Carter Ashton all have offensive capabilities while curtis Hamilton, Marcus Foligno and Zack Kassian should be the official "lunch pail" crew. I'm not sold at all on this style of play but I can see it working well against teams like Sweden and Russia. When it comes to a team thats not afraid to bite back like the States or if they get into a goal for goal game with a team with offensive punch it could be a problem. Their defense will be the focal point and one of their key strong points. Erik Gudbransen, Dylan Olsen and Jared Cowen will be the "rock" of stability on the backend. Gudbransen made the Florida Panther squad but was only sent back to Kingston because of contract issues. how many players in the World Junior Tournament can boast that? If Cowen returns to form, he should be eager to show that he's ready for the show as well. Junior stand out Ryan Ellis will be the teams offensive catalyst from the point and should provide most of the chances coming from the back. You can expect he'll log heavy minutes and provide leadership as the Nations captain. He'll also be joined by Calvin De Haan who is no slouch in ether department. In goal they will have yet another tournament where the duties will be flip flopped and they'll ride the hotter goaltender between Olivier Roy and Mark Visentin. Neither goalies have shown anything above average in the days leading up to the tournament so it's hard to say who will become the number one and if the experiment will be a success. It's always hard on a team and their goalies when no-one knows who the starting goalie will be and a decision is handed down game by game. Team Canada would be number one if it wasn't for the Americans home country advantage, deep roster, Canada's average goaltending, strange choice of style and lack of experience up front. Canada will be in the Gold medal game and will be in it to the end. Canada's defense is just too good for them not to be.

3. Sweden
The Swedes continue to year after year produce high caliber players and provide the world with entertaining World Junior squads, this year should be no different. The Swedes quite possibly have the best goaltender in the tournament in my opinion in Robin Lehner. If not best goalie then second best at worst. The Tres Kronor are coached extremely well and each year they continue to buy into the system. The only knock many can say about Team Sweden is that they cannot play the physical game their neighbors the Finns, and rivals in North America can bring to the table. Future first round draft pick Gabriel Landeskog should help change that this season as he brings a tough and gritty style to Buffalo this year. He's alos the only player other than Lehner to have experienced first hand the North American way so he will feature heavily in this teams drive to a medal. One half of the Klingberg brothers Carl will also be a major factor on Sweden. Anton Lander and the returning veterans will also help give this team some much needed experience. Their defensive core will be their biggest strength this year. The Swedes boast another deep talented defensive core as they seam to keep providing year after year. tough as nails Patrick Nemeth will provide the sandpaper while Tim Erixon and John Klingberg will provide the firepower. Possible top 5 draft pick Adam Larsson will also be present on the backend. As pointed out earlier I truly believe Robin Lehner is the best goalie in the tournament this year. If he can recover from his injuries while playing for the Binghamton Senators he should be able to carry the Swedes even if their offense sputters. In the end the Swedes are a deadly team and should contend for a medal if all goes as planned. The goaltending and defense will be their major strengths and if they can over achieve offensively they could win this tournament.

4. Russia
Individual talent and soft play are two of the Russian squads biggest problems. The Russians can't seam to always struggle mainly because many of their players are more concerned about putting up individual stats rather than put the teams stats first. Nikita Filatov's icing the puck trying to score an empty net goal in Ottawa is the perfect example. This year there isn't a superstar on the roster and the Russians have virtually chosen to ignore any of their prospects playing in North America. Stanislav Galiev and Ivan Telegin both were surprisingly left of the roster along with potential first round draft pick Vladislav Namestnikov. Kirill Kabanov and the Russian Federation's politics have kept him out of the lineup once again as well. Although no Malkin's or Ovechkin's are on the radar this year they do have Vladamir Tarasenko and Evgeni Kuznetsov. Tarasenko is highly under rated going into this tournament and is putting up numbers in the KHL playing against men. Many feel he is the most NHL ready among the many young prospects in this tournament. The Russian's won't have trouble putting the puck in the net when they get the chance but the physical play of the States and Canada should freeze their assets when it comes to chances. The backend of the Russian team is better than years before and Dmitri Orlov should be their goto guy once again. In net they have Igor Bobkov who should fare well having played the North American style of play with the London Knights. A big coaching change also should help the Russians with a more youth friendly coach in Valeri Bragin . All in all the Russians have no where to go but up after last years tournament but could find themselves in a similiar position again due to the Russian Federations politics keeping some of their more talented players off the roster. I can't see the Russians missing the medal rounds however.

5. Finland
Not many other people than myself have the Finns this high on the their lists but I feel the Finns have a decent team as well as an anything goes pool in Pool B. The Finns have just as much of a chance as the Germans, Slovaks and the Swiss so anything can happen. Finland is the only outside of North America to be able to play a heavy hitting physical style without sacrificing talent to do so. A major loss to the Suomi was the loss of star player Mikael Granlund but the Finns should be able to muster enough goals from Teemu Pilkkinen's play making and Joel Armia's offense. The Finns strength up front however isn't offense based but instead comes from their gritty play and determination. Their defensive style is also a key attribute and should be able to hold off the weaker competition from out scoring them. Montreal draft pick Jonas Nattinen is a heavy hitting defensive pillar of their squad. Their defense isn't laden with many big names or even a memorable name. Sami Vatanen and Tommi Kivisto will be the main players on the backend. Many have writting off the Fins goaltending but I've seen Joni Ortio in action and am convinced the Flames had a steal in 09. He could be a sleeper goaltender of the tournament ala Jaroslav Janus. The other netminder Sami Aittokallio is decent as well and the pair should split the round robin. The Finns are a long shot for anything but I feel their style of play could put them in the quarter finals over the other members of Group B. Their not the most talented but each member of the team meshes well and everyone of them have play the rugged shut down style play that could at least stall many of the pool rivals. If they can contain the offense and play spectacular defense they could surprise a few and squeak on to the next round.

6. Germany
The Germans find themselves in an easy group and could be the team to go on but it all depends on one man standing on his head and two men carrying the weight of a nation. Phillipp Grubauer will be their star once again and fellow Germans Tom Kuhnhackl and Tobias Rieder will follow suit. The success of the team rides heavily on those 3 individuals which is a lot of pressure but all 3 players should be able to elevate their games for the situation. 7 of the 21 players currently play in the CHL so the Germans should be accustomed to the North american tempo which should fair well for the Germans. On forward the Germans have Windsor Spitfire star Tom Kuhnhackl as he'll be expected to create most of the chances for the black, orange and yellow. Soon to be 2011 first round draft pick Tobias Rieder continues to impress and shouldn't disappoint offensively. Mirko Hofflin should also be another key figure to watch up front. The Germans can produce offense if given the chance but getting those chances will come harder for them than most. The German blueline is fairly weak and not experienced and only Konrad Abeltshauser stands out among the many. The key to the Germans having any success at all will be in one mans hands, Phillip Grubauer. Grubauer will see a lot of puck this tournament and it's a good thing since he's quite capable of standing on his head. If Grubauer falters however so will the rest of the Germans. Their success depends on it.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Noon
*-> The Gatineau Olympiques have traded Alex Noel, a 6th round pick and their 1st round pick in the 2012 Import Draft to the PEI Rockets for forward Cody Linteau, a 5th round pick and their 1st round pick in the 2012 Import Draft.
*-> The Olympiques also pulled off another deal yesterday by trading Alexandre Beaton and their 5th round pick to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for forwards Felix Bergeron, goaltender Dylan Brind'Amour and a 12th round pick in 2012. The trade period ends Thursday January 6th at noon so expect several more CHL deals in the next few weeks.

Ice Scoopz: Monday Morning
The Christmas Trade Deadline is now in place till the 27th of December and not surprisingly nothing happened. Although it was quieter than I thought as I was expecting a minor deal to occur but thats the salary cap world now a days. A couple of quick rumors for today, I'll still be updating during the freeze as no matter what time of year the rumors will always fly.
*-> Reports out of New Jersey are saying Lou Lamoriello the GM of the Devils held a closed door meeting with the players and threatened a major shake up and told the players with no movement clauses their is possible ways to get them off the roster if needed. Following the meeting Brian Rolston was placed on waivers. Devils management has told the media that it's simply a cap compliance move and have no immediate plans to move or demote Rolston. No negativity has been reported out of Brian Rolston's camp before or after being waived but that could be his veteran experience and professionalism. Another report out of New Jersey has said the players are unaware any closed door meetings have ever happened during that time period. It's a tough call, big Lou is a tough no nonsense GM and you'd have to think he's pretty irate with the situation in the Brick so far. I can see him making those statements but if the players are denying no meetings have taken place it's hard to say so keep that in mind. While on the Brian Rolston topic I'm hearing the Minnesota Wild would like Rolston to return to Minny but once again at half price at the Devils expense. Los Angeles which I believe is a long shot and also the Anaheim Ducks have been linked to the veteran forward.

Ice Scoopz: Sunday Afternoon
A few rumors to report as the Christmas Trade Deadline looms. Not much activity so far but should pick up hopefully later this afternoon.
*-> Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman is insisting that the Bolts have only touched base with free agent goalie Evgeni Nabokov. Yzerman claims his team is prepared to moat likely payout the season with his tandem. Despite these claims many around the hockey world are saying Tampa is indeed interested if they could get him cheap. The Sens keep coming up as well but do not have the cap space to proceed and are struggling to find takers for Brian Lee. Colorado is also reportedly in the mix but still on the fence about bringing in help. Washington is still sticking with their 100% not interested in a goalie this season.
*-> The Columbus Blue Jackets are reportedly talking to the New York Rangers about Michael Del Zotto. It's believed the Jackets are trying to send former Ranger Fedor Tyutin back to the Big Apple along with Nikita Filitov in exchange for young Del Zotto.
*-> Pierre Lebrun has reported several teams have contacted the Devils in regards to Brian Rolston but are asking to get him at half price on re-entry waivers. One of the teams is rumored to be St. Louis.
*-> Lebrun has also reported that underachieving Nikolas Berfors is on the block with the Atlanta Thrashers.

*-> The Columbus Blue Jackets are reportedly talking to the New York Rangers about Michael Del Zotto. It's believed the Jackets are trying to send former Ranger Fedor Tyutin back to the Big Apple along with Nikita Filitov in exchange for young Del Zotto.
*-> Pierre Lebrun has reported several teams have contacted the Devils in regards to Brian Rolston but are asking to get him at half price on re-entry waivers. One of the teams is rumored to be St. Louis.

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks have signed free agent forward Ryan Johnson to a 1 year 1 way contract. Johnson had been playing with the Rockford IceHogs the past season before signing with Chicago. Great signing for the Hawks I'm surprised he lasted this long on the market. A good defensive player to replace the loss of Andrew Ladd and John Madden

*-> The Anaheim Ducks are reportedly shopping one of their many spare defensemen. It's rumored that Paul Mara and Sheldon Brookbank are on the block. Mara has been recently used on the 4th line as a forward so it only makes sense the Ducks will deal one of their spare parts. It's rumored that the Dallas Stars and the Edmonton Oilers are interested in Mara's service.
*-> The St. Louis Blues are still looking at bringing in some help to relieve some pains from recent injuries. The Blues inquired about Alexei Kovelev from the Sens but it's not believed the Sens are shopping him quite yet. Jaime Langenbruner has been linked but it too is also unlikely. The Blues may have to wait till close to the deadline for help or take a look at one of the New York Ranger's expendable forwards like Alexander Frolov or the Flyers Nikolai Zherdev.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Evening
*-> The Tampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has told the Florida media that he has indeed spoken to Nabokov's agent Don Meehan while the Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau has said his club is not at all interested in bringing in another goalie. Meehan has said 3 teams have been in contact with him so far. So we know the Bolts are one of the 3 and if Washington isn't involved then that still leaves 2 left. It's hard to say at this point who would be interested but one would think the Ottawa Senators could be a potential suitor given their recent struggles and their lack of consistency between the pipes. I've heard San Jose's name being mentioned but why wouldn't they have kept him in the first place? and also they would have to move ether Nittymaki or Neimi first. Chicago another name being mentioned as well but they already have Turco and it looks like they have faith in Corey Crawford at this point. It'll be interesting in the up coming days to see where he lands.

*-> An update on Brian Rolston, the Devils have no plans on immidiately placing Rolston on re-entry waivers. Rolston was told he will not have to report to Albany and will remaim with the Devils. No trade plans ether management has said.

A surprise out of the Brick, while Rolston is no longer the same player he was, he still has value. It's no secret the Devils have cap issues after the Kovalchuk signing this was long over due but it makes you wonder if a trade or a planned claim is coming.
*-> Team Canada has made their first round of cuts today as the road to the World Juniors in Buffalo winds down. Ice Scoopz: Monday Afternoon
Not much brewing so far this Monday, trying to get something more from the Sens but nothing more than still fishing.
*-> Here's the Brad Richards news as promised. Brad Richards has reportedly told his agent that his number one choice is the Dallas Stars. He would like to remain a Star and may even be willing to take a pay cut to stay in Texas. That being said it all depends on the Dallas management and financial situation leadsing up to the deadline. My belief is the Stars will deal him at the deadline most likely. The Stars know there is a ton of teams looking to get their hands on him and are willing to pay the asking price which is believed to be outrageous right now. A top prospect and a high pick and a player to help now. They also know he'd seriously consider returning to Dallas in the off season if he doesn't resign. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to wait till the off season to jump in but if a bidding war stars expect both to be a part. The Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers both have been vocal about wanting to acquire Richards and will most likely try near the deadline. A darkhorse in this is the Montreal Canadiens looking to get some more offense and now have the cap space with Markov gone for the season. I think Richards would like to stay with the Stars but it may not be his choice especially if a team is willing to part with a heavy fee, something the Stars would love, cheap young future stars.

Kovalev has had several conversations with Murray in regards to coach Cory Clouston. Kovalev still feels he's being targeted by Clouston and it's rumored to not just be Kovalev unhappy with him. Alfresson had discussions earlier this season about the veterans not respecting him. It's an interesting situation but unless a major deal comes Ottawa's way or Kovalev directly asks to be move don't expect a deal. Ottawa desperately needs offense and unless they get someone who can equally provide it, the Sens need him.

A slow weekend for rumors and hockey news, continued by a slow Monday morning. I hope everyone had a good weekend as I know I got some much needed R & R. A little update on the future of this site as changes are set to finally start taking place after the new year. *-> The Boston Bruins made a few minor league trades last night. The Bruins first dealt defenseman Jeff LeVecchio and forward Jordan Knackstedt to the Florida Panthers for defenseman Sean Zimmerman and a 7th round draft pick. Then they traded forward Levi Nelson to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Juraj Simek.
*-> Rugged defenseman Brendan Witt is looking for a contract. Witt was bought out and released by the New York Islanders last season and now he appears set to make a return to the NHL. His agent has been shopping his services the past week and looks to target a club looking to boost physical play and add leadership. So far no teams have been listed as interested but speculation has the Stars, Canadiens and the Sabres could be inquiring soon if the price is right. Ice Scoopz: Thursday Morning

Reports out of Boston have the Bruins talking to both Dallas and Phoenix about a possible deal. The Ottawa Sun has mentioned Ottawa as a possible trading partner. I can see Phoenix, Dallas is iffy because of the salary limits and I also don't see the Bruins trading Sturm to a division rival.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Night
*-> The New York Rangers have a disgruntled Alexander Frolov on their hands. The enigmatic Frolov is reportedly been vocally upset at the Rangers coaching staff for mis using him this season. He is unhappy with his role or lack of role with the blueshirts and expected to be a key part of the Rangers when he signed on. Many have said the Russian winger will look to move on once again after the end of the season and the KHL most likely wont be the destination. This is the second time now in 2 seasons that Frolov has come out about his unhappiness with his coaching staff. First it was in LA now New York. *-> Anton Gustafsson of the Washington Capitals is contemplating retirement as he's unhappy the way his career has landed. In a recent interview with Swedish newspapers he's said he was demoralized by being bounced around between the Hersey Bears and the ECHL by the Capitals. At the start of the season he took off back to Sweden to contemplate his future in hockey. After not playing all this time he's finally put on the skates and has begun practicing with a Swedish div 3 team. He is still unsure of his future.

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Morning
I'm back after a much needed recovery day from a staff Christmas party Sunday night. Not too much going on today but a few missed news highlights yesterday however.
*-> The Pittsburgh Penguin organization have announced Bill Guerin is hanging up his skates and finally decided to retire. The Pens website reported yesterday the American winger has decided it's the right time for him to move on and will retire a Penguin. Guerin had struggled to find a team this season even after a tryout with the Flyers which is quite surprising. Something tells me there is more to this and that the Penguins have offered him an "off-ice" position with the club. Guerin really didn't seam like he was ready to call it quits but due to an offer and the lack of playing offers he may have been forced into it.
*-> Bob McKenzie from TSN reported Former Ottawa Senator Todd White was waived yesterday by the New York Rangers. He is expected to clear waivers and be sent down to Hartford of the AHL. The Rangers were contemplating what to do with White since the start of the season as they hadn't been able to find a role with the team. Many are saying this could be the prelude to an comming trade but most likely due to Chris Drury returning.
*-> A rumor surrounding the return of Pierre-Marc Bouchard of the Minnesota Wild has caught fire today. The rumor has Pierre-Marc Bouchard heading to the New York Rangers for a prospect and a pick. Bouchard who has been out over 18 months with a concussion is set to return Wednesday and the Wild are looking to add some defensive help it's said. The prospect is reportedly Matt Gilroy. many are jumping on this rumor as yesterday White was waived and the Rangers are making room for Bouchards 4 million plus salary. It is a known fact the Rangers still want offense and the Wild do need help well everywhere but many pundits have already shot this one down. I'm not seeing why the Wild would dump offensive help from Bouchard unless they know something about Bouchard we don't or are worried about him being damaged goods. anything is possible in the hockey world however.

*-> The San Jose Sharks are looking at adding a puck moving defenseman and Francois Beauchemin of the Toronto Maple Leafs is a rumored target of the Sharks. San Jose has also reportedly been looking at Paul Mara of the Anaheim Ducks.
*-> The Marco Sturm situation is still on going as Sturm admitted he's being shopped and has said Los Angeles is a team on his list he's willing to waive his no trade clause. Sturm would not list his other possible destinations. It's said that Sturm is further away from a return than thought and the Kings are still weary as they'd like help sooner than later.
*-> The Boston Bruins are rumored to have taken Blake Wheeler off the table despite the rumors of the B's shipping Stuart and Wheeler to the Dallas Stars for Matt Niskanen. A very doubtful rumor in my mind, it's true the Bruins are looking for a quick puck carrying d-man to replace Matt Hunwick but it's expected they'll look in house first.

Tim Panaccio has reported out of Philly this afternoon. The Flyers have said no deal JVD is not avaliable.
*-> While on the Toronto subject, Brian Burke has told TSN he will not fire Ron Wilson this season. JS Giguere has also come to his coaches defense and said the it's the players responsibility to get themselves out of this one not the coaches. Looks like Wilson is safe til seasons end.
*-> Ottawa's David Hale could be heading down to Binghamton this evening as it's rumoured Bobby Butler will get the call up. Not too sure what's going on in the Nations capital but the rumblings have quieted down late this afternoon. Hopefully we'll see something happen before the weekends end. On the coaching change note it appears the veteran players such as Daniel Alfresson are starting to butt heads with Corey Clouston. The waiving of David Hale yesterday symbolized the need to get rid of cap space so it looks like the deal will involve the Sens taking back a bigger contract their way. Remember Hale was a guy they really liked and thought they'd lose for free in the past weeks hence the Brian Lee waiving. There are rumblings out of Calgary, Boston, Edmonton and Phoenix right now in regards to a possible deal. Some are saying it's going to be a minor deal while many believe it could be a blockbuster trade. I was joking with Jalen and CA a few weeks back saying would you make a deal for Calgary's Jarome Iginla? well some reports have Murray attempting to swing a deal for Iggy which would be a packaged deal of Kovalev, Lee, and Regin and a 1st for Iggy, another forward and a 2nd. I'm not too sold on this deal as A. Iggy would have to lift his clause and B. why would the Flames want this deal? Kovalev is playing no where near Iginla on a bad day. I do agree it might be time for Jarome to move on but this one doesn't quite add up. The Bruins deal revolves around bring Marc Savard back to his hometown Ottawa and their cap situation. Despite the 2 - nothing deficit the Sens fans are still pretty fired up but the Sens can't seam to rally around this. They can't seam to even break out of their own zone without a bad turnover. The Sens need help fast if they want to make the playoffs let alone contend this spring.

Live from Dany Heatleys return to Ottawa as the Sharks takes on the Sens at the Scotiabank place. The atmosphere here is nuts and it should play out to be a good one.

While we're waiting on the Marco Sturm trade details here are todays news a rumors.
*-> Bryan Murray and the Ottawa Senators continue to hold on to Brian Lee as they attempt to trade a trade. Lee cleared waivers yesterday but the Sens would rather deal him instead of sending him back down to the AHL and possibly losing value because of rentry waivers in the future. Murray has said he's giving his team a chance to deal with it's issues within before pulling the trigger on a major deal. Many are saying Murray is attempting to package Lee with a promising young forward which is believed to be ether Nick Foligno or Peter Regin. We'll have to watch Lee as we know now for sure the Sens are looking to dump him before the Christmas deadline. I'm still hearing Minnesota (probably because of the Minnesota connection) and Columbus. I'm not seeing ether, but I could see Minnesota taking another risk on an underachieving player and possibly paying out again ala Guilliame Lattendresse.
*-> Joffrey Lopul is set to return to the Anaheim Ducks after his conditioning stint with Syracuse of the AHL.
*-> With Michael Leighton set to return to Philadelphia the Flyers now have a goaltending controversy. With 3 goalies potentially on the roster with next to no cap space left it's no secret the Flyers are in tough. Sergei Bobrovsky wasn't expected to steal the number one spot right out of the gate and was expected to play the season in the AHL so the Flyers have a major decesion. It appears the flyers will not demote Bobrovsky to the AHL as he's played admirably so far. Bobrovsky would not have to pass through waivers as Brian Boucher and Leighton would. That leaves ether Boucher or Leighton on their way to ether a new team or the AHL. Lee cleared waivers yesterday but the Sens would rather deal him instead of sending him back down to the AHL and possibly losing value because of rentry waivers in the future. Murray has said he's giving his team a chance to deal with it's issues within before pulling the trigger on a major deal. Many are saying Murray is attempting to package Lee with a promising young forward which is believed to be ether Nick Foligno or Peter Regin. We'll have to watch Lee as we know now for sure the Sens are looking to dump him before the Christmas deadline. I'm still hearing Minnesota (probably because of the Minnesota connection) and Columbus. I'm not seeing ether, but I could see Minnesota taking another risk on an underachieving player and possibly paying out again ala Guilliame Lattendresse.

*-> It looks like Marco Sturm is on his way out of Boston and headed to sunny Los Angeles after agreeing to waive his no trade clause. We're still trying to figure out the return for Sturm. TSN broke the trade but is also at a standstill on who is coming back to Boston.

It's pretty sick that someone would rob Pat Burn's wifes car after the funeral, but anyways here's this mornings rumors and news.
*-> The Kitchener Rangers have traded back Sudburys 8th round pick in the 2012 Selection draft for forward Ryan Lopes of the Wolves.
*-> It's been reported that Peter Schaefer has called it a career once again. This is not official yet though merely still a rumor. I think many people are just seeing that the Manitoba Moose site has listed him as retired from the club.

*-> Brian Lee has been placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators this afternoon. The Minnesota Wild has mild interest as well as the Blue Jackets its been said. The rumor has it the Sens were trying to work a deal with Washington before the Caps pulled the trigger on the Hannan deal so it's interesting to see what's gunna happen next for Lee

*-> The Atlanta Thrashers have signed Tim Stapleton from the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL and removed center Patrice Cormier for the IR and assigned him to the Chicago Wolves.
*-> The Colorado Avalanche have trade veteran defenseman Scott Hannan for Tomas Fleischmann of the Washington Capitals. So it appears the Caps had a trade in the works but it wasn't ether destination as rumored. I dunno if I like this one for the Caps but it does fill the role they need so it works. The Aves were up to something with all of the backend shuffling and were able to upgrade upfront at the same time. Fleischmann could pay out if given the right situation and role.

*-> Reports out of Boston have the Bruins attempting to shop Michael Ryder to continue to clear cap space for the return of Marco Sturm. The Bruins now have enough space to bring Marc Savard back into the fold but still lack cap for Sturm. Many are still anticipating a Marc Savard deal as he's one of the few movable pieces in Boston. Ryder is playing well but his contract is too heavy for many teams to take on at this point in the season so look for another player to be shipped out instead. Ference should now be safe that Hunwick has been moved as well as the rest of the defense corps. Another name to watch is Dan Paille who also could be moved.

Here's the last few rumors of the day...
*-> Juraj Mikus of Dinamo Riga has been loaned to Spartak Moscow it's been reported by Russian media sources.
*-> The Toronto Maple Leafs may be taking another look at center Marc Savard as his return approaches it's being reported. The Bruins need to still clear more cap space and One of their 3 centers appear to be on the way out. Savard makes the most sense but is hampered by his no trade clause which can only be lifted for 5 teams, two of which are division rivals the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs which helps fuels this fire. Many are also saying Phil Kessel has requested his former teamate. Still speculation on most peoples parts but with Brian Burkes self imposed Christmas trade deadline and the lack of a star centerman, there isn't much out there other than one of the 3 out of Boston. Savard being the best option to be moved. Still would the b's sacrifice a former key member of their team to a rival?

*-> The Washington Capitals appear set to make an immanent deal for a defenseman in the following 48 hours according to reports. There appears two possible trades so far that are floating around. The first is a possible deal with the Los Angeles Kings looking to add some offense to help lift them out of their slide. The player in question is reportedly Tomas Fleischmann for the Capitals and going the other way is Matt Greene or Rob Scuderi. The second deal and the more likely scenario in my opinion is Kevin Bieksa from Vancouver for Tomas Fleischmann. The Canucks would like some offensive depth while Bieksa will help round out the Caps backend. Fleischmann was recently a healthy scratch on Novemeber 17th so it appears that the Caps are ready to part ways, the Caps have being looking for defensive help since the Canadiens knocked them out of last seasons playoffs. Bieksa has been in the Caps sights as well since the rumors hit the media this summer. The Canucks are close to getting a full blueline back so something has to give there as well.

Ice Scoopz: Friday Evening
Some rumors live from the Hamilton Bulldogs / Binghamton Senators game at the Scotiabank Place. So far a pretty even 0-0 game. Not really any standouts tonight, I thought Corey Locke who leads the AHL would be more of a force in front of his former city but instead I've barely noticed him. Eric Gryba and Robin Lehner have looked good for the Sens while Enqvist and Max Pacioretty have stood out for the dogs. Anyways here's the rumors as promised.
*-> I've looked more into the Tomas Vokoun to Ottawa rumors and they appear to be 100% false. Several sites have been saying the Sens were trying for a deal with Florida to get some help between the posts. This one doesn't make sense in anyway so I was doubtful from the start. Markstrom isn't ready for the show yet so no sense in Florida rushing a trade as well as the Sens don't have the cap space so it would have to be a cap for cap deal plus goaltending isn't the Sens biggest problem at the moment.
*-> Another goaltending rumor has the Leafs willing to deal J.S Giguere now that Jussi Rynnas is dominating the AHL. The rumor has it that the Leafs are looking at moving J.S close to the deadline to make room for next season. Jonas Gustavsson would be the more likely trade candidate with high value but the Leafs would like to keep their young European free agent tandem and part with age. JS could be an attractive piece for a team looking for playoff drive with a shakey tandem. This will be one to watch as the deadline nears.

*-> TSN has confirmed that future Hall of Famer Chris Chelios is in talks with the KHL club Vityaz about a possible signing. Chelios has reportedly told his agent to spread the word he is avaliable and would like to return to hockey yet again. While he said he is in talks with former NHLer and teammate GM Alexei Zhamnov he said his age (48) most likely means nothing will come of it. Good for Chelly though for still trying to play, the way I see it is as long as you can still contribute in some way why not try to make a living off it?

*-> The Philly Flyers are showcasing Brian Boucher as Michael Leighton gets set to return. The Back netminder has player back to back games for the first time in ages. Sergei Bobrovsky is clearly the teams number one choice going forward and as the team pushes its back against the cap, Boucher could provide a little relief. Pat Burns 1952 - 2010
I've just learned that coaching legend Pat Burns has passed today alongside his family. Burns at 58 lost his battle with cancer after a 5 year fight with the disease. Burns will be remembers as one of hockeys greatest coaches of all time and hockey will forever miss his witty remarks and commentary about the game. It's an awful shame the Hockey Hall of Fame didn't honor this man before he passed instead giving nods to two women who do not belong along the regular Hall legends such as Pat Burns. We all know they will honor him now but it would have been nice to give Pat Burns the recognition he deserves while he was still here with us to feel proud and honoured by his achievements. Anyways thats another article for another time. I want to wish the Burns family my deepest sympathy as no family should suffer such a loss especially one as special as Pat Burns. He will be well remembered.

*-> The Ottawa Senators are working the phones still its being reported. The Sens are trying to move a body on the backend to clear some cap and avoid losing David Hale for nothing. GM Murray is looking to get something back for Hale instead of placing him on waivers and losing him. Brian Lee is also an odd man out but he too would have to pass through the wire. Its being said Hale is the defenseman they'd like to keep due to his decent play but there are currently no real takers. Some are also saying Murrays asking price is too steap for the 1st rounder. The Sens may be forced to deal Hale to attempt to get anything back in return. So far no rumored players in this yet but could the Minnesota connection come back into play?

*-> Marc-Andre Bergeron was recently interviewed by Stephane Alarie of Canoe.ca and he has said he is still recoving from off season surgery and wont be game ready till December. Bergeron also said he'd like to return to the Habs but wont wait for a call from them. He has said his agent has been in contact with several teams. The Tampa Bay Lightning are known to be highly interested in him as are apparently the Ducks. Dont expect a signing probably till he's 100%, the Habs are rumored to be linked again but I think they'll finally give Yannick Weber since he's been recalled or Mathieu Carle.

Trade! Carolina -> Calgary
*-> A little late but here it is, the Calgary Flames have traded Ian White and Brett Sutter for Anton Babchuk and Tom Kostopolous.
Great deal for the Flames, they not only get rid of another headache headline they don't need in Sutter and bring in a big point shot and a reliable powerplay quarterback. Not only that but they bring in a vocal dressing room guy as well, something they badly need. The Canes fare fairly well as well but a lot of the deal banks on Ian White being able to adapt to their style unlike he did in Cowtown and work the pp but they already have that in Corvo and had it in Babchuk. They do get a project prospect who could develop a little more with the right guidance.

*-> The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly talking to the Pittsburgh Penguins in regards to Brooks Orpik. The rumored offer would have the Oil sending Dustin Penner to the Penguins. This rumor has been popping up all morning online but there doesn't seam to be any truth to it but you never know. I can't see the Oilers wanting to deal Penner quite yet. Its still early to rule this one a dud but I'll keep looking into it.
*-> Bob McKenzie of TSN has squashed the rumors surrounding Flames captain Jerome Iginla. The recent waive of rumors had Jerome heading to ether the Los Angeles Kings or the Colorado Avalanche. Ice Scoopz: Weekend Wrap Up
*-> Jeff Carter has signed an 11 year deal with the Philly Flyers this weekend worth roughly 5.27$ million per year towards the cap. Another long extension hopefully it bodes well for the Flyers. Another young center peice locked upfor the forseable future. This should end all Carter rumors for now...
*-> Another recently debated rumor should also be ended today as the St. Louis Blues have locked up David Backes to a 5 year deal worth 4.5$ million or 22.5$ million overall. Great signing for the Blues, he's a great young player that should help the Blues become a championship team.
*-> The Tampa Bay Lightning are hotly pursuing free agent Marc-Andre Bergeron. The Bolts look to add some offensive punch to their backend and Bergeron appears to be a cheap solid solution. His agent has addmitted to several inquiries but no solid offers. He also said he had not been in touch with his former club the Montreal Canadiens like many have reported now that Andre Markov is once again out. A busy weekend for signings as several teams locked up key pieces for the future. I'll have the weekend summary of all the missed transactions and signing around 3pm as I've got a busy Monday going on and to make matters worse the old Blackberry has died on me. Heres a few quick ones
*-> Miroslav Satans agent Alan Walsh has confirmed that the Slovakian winger is in talks with the Montreal Canadiens about a possible signing. Satan who had a decent last half of the season with the Boston Bruins last year is currently playing with HC Slovan Bratislava. Looks like Montreal is getting set to bolster their secondary scoring with a seasoned veteran in Guerin or Satan. We'll have to keep an eye open for this one.
*-> Johan Harju has been called up by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Norfolk Admirals.

Sutter punched a man in the face after leaving a Phoenix bar and was arrested. The Flames sent him back to Abbotsford today. Just another string of bad news for the Flames.

*-> The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly talking to Bill Guerin about a possible signing. The American winger has yet to receive an offer from any National Hockey League team thus far. Speculation has been fueled wigth Montreal dumping camp space however I feel the deal was made due to over crowding and the fact Picard has impressed management.

Trade! Montreal -> Colorado
*-> While eating lunch at McDonalds I was informed by Mack that the Montreal Canadiens have dealt rugged defenseman Ryan Obyrne to the Colorado Avalanche for prospect Michael Bournival. We knew that one was coming as the Aves were pushing hard earlier in the season for Obyrne and now with Alexandre Picards impressive start to the season he became the odd man out. Good deal for both clubs. Thanks again Mack for ruining my lunch haha.
Ice Scoopz: Thursday Morning
Lots of flurry around Jarome Iginla this morning as I continue to look into the rumors from yesterday. As I said yesterday I'm still not sold their shopping so take these as you will. I just wanted to clarify a few things I've noticed on other blogs, forums and emails I've received. Hopefully this answers some of your question in regards to where or how accurate my rumors are. I know there are some bloggers who have rating systems and say they back up most of their rumors because they come from "good" sources, this site does not have a rating system or guarantees any rumors as being true. Hence why they are called rumors. While I do have sources I always keep in mind that they are rumors even if they come true. I try my hardest to dig and sort through the rumors and look for any truth and validity in them before I post them so I can give my educated take on the matter. I do post most rumors that I see come up from multiple places and if its only a single source rumor its usually not worth noting but something from multiple sources then I will look deeper at it. As I said I do have sources but realize sometimes they will feed me a line or two that are false to keep me on my toes. Many people have asked me in the past few days why I don't guarantee all my content posted. My answer is simple, I take pride in my sites accuracy so unless I'm 100% sure its going to go through I won't say its a done deal but I will post most rumors stupid or true and give me feedback as it creates intelligent debates for the sites fans and posters. Don't shoot the messenger as they well unless I guarantee a for sure thing then shoot away! Anyways I hope that clarifies that for everyone asking or sending me angry emails claiming a trade rumor hasn't come true.
I just want to take this time as well to thank all of our troops overseas all of our veterans for what they have done and sacrificed for everyone here and all over the world. A minute of silence isn't enough to express our gratitude for everything we have .

*-> The Los Angeles Kings rumor involving Jarome Iginla is reportedly revolving around the Calgary Flames wanting Dustin Brown and a high level Russian prospect. The Flames are interested in a younger more vocal player to be able to ease into the loss of their longtime captain while the Kings would like add some offensive punch and replace their captain with the more offensive Iggy. Another don't see happening deal in my opinion, why would the Kings part with their less expensive younger model of Iginla?
*-> The second Iginla rumor that's swimming around this morning is a shake up trade with the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres would send the slumping Vanek to Calgary for Jarome. The Flames looking for extra offense punch and the Sabres trying to add some heart into their floundering squad. I can't see them trading Iggy as I said. I also believe that the Flames need someone who will start a fire under the guys in that dressing room and the rest will come. Too many underachieving one dimensional players on that squad.

Back after a few days off followed by a couple of quiet rumorless days. A couple of rumors to chase today.
*-> Petr Sykora is on the verge of signing a deal in Belarus today. Sykora is working on a contract with the KHL's Dinamo Minsk. It's not official but it's expected to go through within the next 24 hours.
*-> Dustin Boyd is reported to have cleared waivers today and been assaigned to Hamilton of the AHL by the Montreal Canadiens.
*-> Another Jarome Iginla rumor has surfaced this morning. I don't feel their moving him at this point or possibly ever but here it is. The Buffalo Sabres are reported to be offering up Tim Connolly and a assortment of picks for the Calgary captain. Buffalo is looking to some extra help in the leadership department and some extra offense. The Flames get Connolly to try and get back on track. I don't see why the Flames would downgrade from a great gritty guy plus he's their captain to an injury prone player who doesn't help with the dressing room at all.

*-> The Dallas Stars signed goalie of the future Jack Campbell of the Windsor Spitfires to a 3 year Entry Level deal. Campbell will remain with the Spitfires till the end of the season and try and take the jump to Dallas next season.
*-> Alexander Urbom has been recalled from Albany Devils to the New Jersey Devils.
*-> The Buffalo Sabre's are attempting to make a move. GM Darcy Regier has admitted to attempting to work the phones to complete a minor deal. Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Evening
*-> Former New Jersey Devil Bobby Holik has been voicing his opinion on the Ilya Kovalchuk signing the past few days on several radio shows saying that it was a bad signing and it's the cause of New Jerseys woes. He also went on to criticize Kovalchuk for being late to a team meeting and having a bad reputation around the league. The coaches are not to blame according to Holik as well, the blame lies on the contract. The Devils are a different team this season that's for sure. I think while that Kovalchuk contract is ugly and completely unmovable it's not it's fault the Devils are doing poorly. Yes it limits them to icing a thin roster but at the same time it's the managements problem for A. agreeing to it and B. not making any changes to get cap space. I agree it's not John Macleans fault and he still needs time to get a system in place. It's not an easy task turning a defense first team into an offensive powerhouse. Look at Minnesota who are going through similiar growing pains. To blame Kovalchuk for the teams woes is pretty silly. Yes he should be producing more but give him something to work with. Criticize his play but the weight alone of losing shouldnt be on his back alone. Veteran guys like Arnott, Langenbrunner, Tallinder should be pushing the team. It's not just Kovalchuk who has struggled it's the entire team from the net up. I know CA will be the first to comment and call me a "Russian Sympathizer" but I don't agree it's entirely his fault, just look at the rest of his team. There is more than a handful of guys who should be helping out. His play has been poor and his attitude is that of a prima donna but he has shown heart in the past. He does have to step up but it's much bigger than just him. I believe it was Bobby Holik who said once "if you put a massive contract in front of me I'm obviously going to sign it". For how many years did Holik's inflated contract burden New York and New jersey? Management should share equal blame for putting themselves in this mess in the first place. To me New Jersey woes are simple, a coaching change, a big roster turn over on the backend, the lack of cap space, and a new style change all at once are the source of their woes not Ilya Kovalchuk. As Maclean said earlier the team should be playing their hardest and not relying on Ilya to bail them out every night.
