Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Morning

*-> A small trade to report but its not 100% yet but also its only a minor deal so it most likely won't make waves. The Penguins have acquired goaltending prospect Mattias Modig from the Anaheim Ducks for what is believed to be a 4th round draft pick. Not fully sure as of right now though.

*-> Backup goalie Peter Budaj is the latest NHLer to attract interest from Russia. Budaj who got bumped out of the lineup by Craig Anderson is a free agent this summer and many feel he will take his game to Europe next season as the goalie market will be busy but packed this summer. Lokomotiv was being mentioned as a possible destination.

*-> Tomas Plekanec is rumored to be ready to test the waters this summer. The Montreal Canadians and his camp are extremely close in terms and length but Plekanec's camp knows he's at the top of the free agent center list and could command big money from a desperate team. Plekanec would love to return to the Habs and it's rumored its his number one choice but would like to head to the open market as a bargaining chip. We'll have to wait on this one as I've heard a deal is very close to being done and he won't test the waters. This situation makes sense but should remind fans of the Alexei Kovalev situation last summer.

Maybe Europe is where Budaj belongs. He could barely compete for a starting job against Theodore and Raycroft, let alone Anderson playing like a real starter. I guess he is still relatively young though, so who knows.

Turns out the rumors were wrong on Budaj as he signed today. I have a feeling he knows he's a back-up calibre goalie and might as well stick it out in the NHL as long as possible before taking off to Europe.
