Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Morning

*-> Phil Kessel and the Toronto Maple Leafs have mended the fence after a brief fall out Sunday. Kessel has now said the media has taken his words out of context and what he meant was his line wasn't working out and not his time in Toronto. He went on to say he loves the city and wants to sign another contract there in the future. Brian Burke also went on the record to squash this one and told the Toronto Media, the coach nor the player is going anywhere so they both should work things out with each other. Good news for Toronto fans.

*-> Andrew Peters was waived yesterday with the intent of a mutual buyout according to Bob McKenzie of TSN.

*-> Ray Emery could be headed to Long Island this morning, I'm hearing more and more like the Isles will take another shot at acquiring a free goalie off waivers once again. If they were to succeed they would then flip Evgeni Nabokov back to Detroit. The Isles are down to young Kevin Poulin with Rick DiPietro's latest injury.

What's with the double standard?

If this was Murray and Spezza, you'd be saying not to believe him, that there were locker room issues and that Spezz would be traded any day now.

Instead, because Burke is perceived as a better GM(which in my mind has yet to be seen), the Kessel issue gets put to bed like the media had undergone some actual reasonable thought.

Unbelievable how some people

a)continue to give Murray a lack of respect in spite of the championship calibre teams he has left in Anaheim and Detroit;

and

b)Give a whiny American hotshot with attitude problems more credit than a homegrown Canadian who has taken every bit of criticism off the chin and stood by his team. Unbelieveable.

CA you have a few points there but however unlike Bryan Murray his fellow GM Brian Burke quickly crushed these rumors. Murray on the other hand created his set of problems on his own to use for his own good then turned it around on the player making Jason Spezza look bad in the process. People understand he was trying to fish for a deal but couldn't he have avoided the whole situation by say HE was interested in seeing what he could get from around the league instead of releasing a private closed door conversation to the media and telling the Ottawa fans Spezza wasn't happy in Ottawa despite it being the opposite? Then retracting everything like nothing ever happened, if I was Mr.Spezza I'd feel pretty let down by my management and organization.

I'm not saying Burke is a great GM but he diffused the situation without putting the player or the coach under a bus. CA the main thing between both situations is I report trade rumors when the rumor is dead I've got nothing to report. Burke said neither the player or the coach is going anywhere so there goes the rumor. In the Murray situation we all knew that he was attempting to shop Spezza so the rumor remained even after Murray smartly decided it wouldn't be best for his club. The fact that he attempted shows that he'd may consider a trade in the future (I don't believe he will if he truly is a good GM). I do like many things Burke has done with the Leafs.

but I don't believe Burke is a "Super GM" as many people predict. He's done many smart things that work with the new CBA such as allowing other teams to paying him with picks and prospects to take their unwanted salary. However he has also made many bad deals such as the Phil Kessel future sacrificial fly he tried to hit. I have the utmost respect for Bryan Murrays previous accomplishments but with the Senators he's not really shown his previous talents as a GM and I think many Sens fans feel it's been a major let down and struggle ever since he's taken over since he's done so well in the past.

On the American hotshot comments I do agree with you, Kessel doesn't deserve to have the media silenced over this. Kessel made some stupid remarks and there's no excuse no matter how upset you are to openly criticize your coach and team. I don't buy he was refering to his line but Kessel knows he's not going anywhere as Burke would rather burry Kessels carrer rather then have a Dany Heatley situation (which BTW he agreed with Murray on). Kessel needs to shut up and play his way back on the 1st line if he's unhappy.
