Ice Scoopz: Monday Morning

*-> The Montreal Canadiens scouts were in attendence at the San Jose vs Florida game the other night further speculating trade rumors between the two clubs. The Ottawa Senators scouts were also takingin the sights as well as scouts from the Los Angeles Kings. The Canadiens are still believed to be watching Stephen Weiss while the Ottawa Senators are rumored to be watching Devin Setoguchi or Jamie McGinn.

*-> The Canadiens also reportedly have contacted the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brian Burke admitted that he and GM Pierre Gauthier have had trade talks in the past couple of weeks and is willing to ship a player to a division rival if the return is good. The Canadiens have interest in Tomas Kaberle it's speculated.

*-> Bryan Murray has broke the news to Chris Phillips this weekend about his no trade clause. He has yet to get back to his GM about where he would like to go or if he'll waive it but Murray has told him that he does not fit into to the Senators plans.

*-> I'm still hearing that the Senators are in talks with the Columbus Blues Jackets, Jakob Voracek is the rumored return along with a pick for Sergei Gonchar.

Scoopz,

Before the season, you posted the Isles' pickup of Michael Grabner on waivers from the Panthers and noted it was a good pickup for the Isles.

I commented that I was never sold on Grabner and believed Vancouver's willingness to part with him and the Panthers' decision to waive him after he was central to the Ballard deal were evidence to support a bust label.

Today, he's tied with Couture for the rookie goal scoring lead and is a legitimate Calder candidate.

Kudos to you, man.

Getting Toronto's lottery pick from Boston sounds pretty nice. I dont know if I would trade a lottery pick if I was Chirelli for Phillips at this point....

I've always liked Michael Grabner even during his days with the Spokane Chiefs. When Florida made the deal with Vancouver to acquire him I thought it was a steal then when Florida gave him up for free on waivers it was just stupidity. Grabner is the type of player who benefits from playing with a weak team as he gets to play top line minutes instead of being forced into a bottom six role like many of Vancouver's prospect do. It's hard to develop with only 6 minutes a game, the Islanders were exactly what Grabner and his game breaking speed needed.

Agreed Scoopz, that was a good prediction. I also believe you said Ennis would work out, which is true as well.

Tom, I've been mulling this over all weekend, and bounced some ideas off Scoopz. The only way that trade goes down is if we take some significant cap space off their hands in return. That means we trade Phillips and Nashville's 1st for Toronto's first and either:

a) Tim Thomas, who is making 5M for the next 2 years. Problem: Bruins want to win a cup NOW and Thomas is the best goalie in the league this year. Not happening.

b) Marc Savard, who makes a little over 4M until 2017, but may have to retire due to his latest concussion. Problem: Murray isn't stupid enough to take on a 4M cap hit for 6 more years when the player barely knows his own name now.

c) Blake Wheeler, who made 2.2M but is restricted this summer. Makes sense for both sides, as Seguin will earn more than him in bonuses and Boston won't be able to give him a raise. Slow season but has the scoring touch Ottawa needs. I'd even throw Regin in to give them a player this cup run.

C is my prediction, let's see if it goes down.
