Ice Scoopz: Monday Afternoon

*-> The Vancouver Canucks may have a fued in the dressing room steming from the Olympic games. Ryan Kesler as we all know made several comments about Roberto Loungo during the games to the media. Kesler spoke on sending text messages to some of his US teamates telling them where to shoot and he also made a comment about how hes was reportedly rattled and so on. The comments weren't suposed to be serious according to Kesler but Luongo has reportedly taken them extremely seriously and has created a rift between them. Both sides are downplaying the incident saying it was all in fun and everythings on the line for your country. Luongo appeared on CBC after hours and still looked a bit upset over the remarks but tried to squash them. How this plays out for the Canucks is yet to be seen or if even really even is a issue at all.

*-> The Ottawa Senators have offered defenseman Anton Volchenkov another deal reportedly worth 4.5$mil over 3 years but this too looks like it'll be rejected as well. Volchenkov is rumored to be seaking over 5 million dollars for his market value and his agent has compared his services to the Toronto Maple Leaf's signing of Mike Komisarek. Another lost key defenseman to free agency for the Sens?

Volchenkov is a lot of fun to watch, and one of the better Dmen in his zone in the league in my opinion.
Over 5mil is a lot for a defensive Dman (especially when your PP is a joke), but how can you argue with him when the sens are overpaying so many coasters? The streaky Kovalev at 5.5, and Kelly the utility player at over 2. I say give him the money he has clearly earned, and trim some of this fat in the offseason.

If it takes anything more than Phillips' money at $3.75M/yr, then I hope we let him walk.

I like Volchi and think he's a valuable player, but you can't pay big money to guys that don't produce at both ends of the ice.

Consistency's important among the top four too, and for that reason, I hope Murray moves out Kuba at the draft.

This group needs improvement if the Sens hope to contend, and I don't see it happening if Volchi and Kuba are both paid $4.5M+....

Its a fair point that its hard to justify a shutdown Dman being a top earner on a team, especially one that has almost nobody to play the point on the powerplay this year.

But Volchenkov can match up with any forward in the league, and scares forwards with his crushing open ice hits.

More importantly, he works extremely hard, and was dynamic in the playoffs in '07; a big part of that cup run (when Spezza and Heatley disappeared). I want the Sens to be a team that rewards guys like this, instead of only giving the big money to no-shows.
