Free Agent Frenzy 2

*-> The St. Louis Blues and the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly talking about a possible trade. The rumor is the Oilers are looking to ship Sheldon Souray to the St. Louis Blues for former Oiler Eric Brewer. Not to sure why the Blues would pull the trigger on this one but it could certainly help the Edmonton Oilers.

*-> Zybenek Mihalik is done with talking to the Phoenix Coyotes and it's rumored he's looking at signing in the Eastern conference. The New Jersey Devils are rumored to be interested as well as Ottawa to reunite him with his brother Milan.

*-> Sergei Gonchar has signed a 3 year deal with the Ottawa Senators for 5.5$ million.

Dear god, it's the chartered accountant. Please do not let the gonchar signing bite us in the ass. Please let his conditioning be like Alfies so that even when his deal expires at age 39, he is still putting up a point per game. Please let his knees and groin be fully healed and not recurring injuries that shelf him for our next 3 playoff runs. Please let cowen and/or wiercioch be able to step into the void left by volchenkov and shut down the opposition. Please let our forwards be deep enough to score goals.

We ask this in the name of your son, Daniel alfredsson.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. Actually a lot.

First Kovy, now Gonch. Good lord, can we not sign a UFA that isn't 2+ years past his prime and badly in decline.

Please hope, CA? I think it'll take a miracle for this contract not to bite us before the season's out.

So does this mean Cullen is out?

Still 6M in cap room to sign Regin, Foligno, Campy...

Really, a miracle for this not to bite us in the ass? I have no idea what you mean about seeing a decline in his play honestly, hes a dman (who can play way closer to 40 than a forward), and he is not injury prone historically. I agree there are downsides to the signing, but considering this UFA pool I applaud Murray for having the balls to make this signing, I expect 50pts next year from him.

Way to go with the coverage Scoopz, make sure to share some opinions!

Btw I lol'd at that $4mil for Armstrong thing.....

Yes Tom, a miracle. Gonch is badly worn down from the player he once was, and his play declined markedly throughout the year to the point he was, at times, a defensive liability in the playoffs. Go watch the Montreal series again if you think otherwise.

I have no idea how you can say he doesn't have an injury history, he's had numerouse knee, groin and shoulder injuries, all coming as he's neared the end of his career.

Signing well past their prime players to mult-year deals that eat up 10% of your cap just isn't smart. A year ago, everyone was saying the same thing about Murray's courage when he signed Kovie - tell me you don't wish we had that $5M to spend elsewhere right now.

CA - I don't necessarily think Cullen's out, but it may be that Murray think's he's going to get another offer he can't compete with or maybe (hopefully) he's working on moving a cap eater out.

I dont think anyone thought signing Kovalev was courageous, hes one of the laziest players in the league. Gonchar is not from that mould at all. And 1 major injury in his career does not an injury prone player make, someone needs to give you a lesson on how to use hockeydb.
6 months from now we can revisit this and we will decide.

Tom,

I don't need to use The Hockey Database...I actually watch the games.

If you think Gonch has only had one major injury or that his play hasn't declined, you definitely don't.

Why exactly do you think the Pens had no problem letting him walk only to turn around and sign Martin and Michalek.

If you think revisiting this in six months will solve anything, you've missed my point entirely. I'm concerned how Gonch will play in the playoffs and in the last half of that contract.

I could well turn out this signing works out well for the Sens...but the CA's prayers will need to be answered.

And yes, Murray's signing of Kovie was described everywhere as "ballsy" and "bold"...just like this signing.

Great Jaylan. I find it weird; I do believe you follow hockey, but everything you say is confusing, and often annoying. Work on it.
