Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Afternoon

*-> Tomas Fleicshmann and the Washington Capitals have come to terms on a contract before arbitration and Fleischmann will make 2.6$ million in a 1 year deal.

*-> The Edmonton Oilers and Gilbert Brule have also avoided arbitration and have agreed to a 2 year deal worth 1.85$ per season.

*-> The New Jersey Devils and defenseman Mark Fraser have signed off on a 1 year deal worth 500K.

*-> Anton Strahlman will remain a Blue Jacket after signing a 1 year contract with Columbus this morning.

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks have signed prospect Nick Leddy to an Entry level deal.

*-> Denis Grebeshkov is on the verge of signing in the KHL. A rumor surfaced this morning that the Russian D-man has signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the 'K' but it has been since reported a deal is on the table but has yet to be signed. Grebeshkov is waiting till the end of the week before signing the 2 year deal rumored to be worth 4 million per season. Grebeshkov would rather play in the NHL this season but interest is limited as well as his asking price. Its expected he'll sign a deal just as Maxim Afinogenov did last fall with an NHL release clause in case interest spikes.

More around 4PM.

Rumour has it Leddy signed a deal with NO bonuses whatsoever.... unheard of in this day. Even the most marginal entry-level player gets incentives for games played.

While this is obviously motivated by the Hawks desperate cap situation, I can't help but suspect that the NHLPA will be very unhappy about this. My fear is that this will erupt into a bigger war between the NHL and the players. If they can ever get their leadership together, I'd beware the PA's option to not ratify the CBA next summer.

Any thoughts Scoopz?

Leddy did sign the deal without any bonuses and it does have a lot to do with the Hawks cap situation. I don't think the NHLPA can be upset over this because the player could have put up more of a fight. If Leddy wanted to he could have held out for his bonuses. He could have out waited the Hawks as their not going to let one of the highly touted prospects sit or walk. The Hawks never had the upper hand in this siuation so the NHLPA can't really protest. The only thing the NHLPA can complain about is if Chicago guilt tripped or pressured Leddy into not taking the bonuses for the "good" of the team but in this day an age almost every player has an agent.

There is however no denying that there will be a war next summer and it may not work out well for hockey fans yet again.
