The IR: Thursday Afternoon

*-> Milan Michalek of the Ottawa Senators gave the Sens more bad news today as he announced he's out for season after tearing his ACL in his left knee. He was playing with a partially torn ACL before the Pittsburgh game and finished the job during the game.

Can't believe a guy who looked so dominant in the first 20 games of the season faded so badly... Everyone I talk to about Michalek argues that he was injured quite a bit and not playing 100%. Well the guy still played in 66 games, and only put up 34 points! Moreover, he put up most of those points in the first 20 games... Pathetic!

I can't fathom how a guy like Michalek gets off Scott free in a media scrutinized city like Ottawa. Jason Spezza gets constantly bashed even when the team is winning and he puts up points, yet the only viable return from the Heatley trade can pull this bs and not have to worry about it. Makes me sick to my stomach. While the alarming lack of appreciation of Spezza in this city is a separate issue, I do feel Michalek should face some criticism for his absolutely embarassing play, although I do give him props for playing hurt. Why are none of the Sens panicking? Because they know Michalek is a waste of space out there and needs a sublime setup to bury his goal-every-five-games production. Maybe with a bit of rehabilitation Milan can get back to the dominant form we saw earlier in the year, but I'm not holding my breath. Heatley is laughing all the way to the beach, which is probably where he'll be hanging out once Colorado beats San Jose.

Fair points CA, It is weird how the guys who are doing the heavy lifting on this team take all of the criticism. Even Kovalev's 50pts puts him in the top 4 on the Sens, and he can't catch a break with people. They guy is 37 and notoriously lazy, isnt this par for the course?
Guys like Winchester and Shannon piss me off too. These guys are sub-NHL players, and have done nothing for the team despite plenty of chances this year. How about we burn them at the stake?

Im not sure if I agree with Winchester and Shannon being "sub par" nhl players. I will agree that they are not high impact players, but they do a decent job on the 4th line playing 10 or less minutes a night. Winchy provides some speed and physical play on the forcheck. He's not going to go out and score a bunch of goals, but he will grind it out in the offensive zone. Shannon is small, but provides speed and some creativity to be somewhat of a play maker. I think the problem is that Ottawa has a lot of guys who can fill that 3rd and 4th line out, but we are numbered when it comes to capable top 6 guys (right now because of injury). We have a lot of guys who flirt with the line of being able to play top 6 mintues, but not a lot who can actually preform in the top 6 roles. Because we are plagued with injuries right now, we are looking for people to step up, putting the spotlight on those bottom 3rd and 4th line guys to "become superstars". We have to realize that's not going to happen. They are going to play the same style of game they played when we had a healthy roster, its just going to show more because we are placing our 3rd and 4th lines under a microscope right now looking for our new savior.

GO SENS GO!!!!
