Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Afternoon

Tomorrow I'll be announcing the official results of the 2010 Be A GM contest on the forum so check back tomorrow evening for the first ever winner. I still am getting several late entry e-mails but unfortunately to be fair the contest is closed but you still may post your team for the rest of the Ice Scoopz fans to be the judge of.

*-> Tim Kennedy was signed by the New York Rangers Sunday evening. The Rangers and Kennedy agreed to a 1 year 1 way deal similar to his deal with the Buffalo Sabres before being bought out.

*-> Wacey Hamilton of the Medicine Hat tigers has signed a deal with the Colorado Avalanche on a try out basis.

*-> Doug Weight will remain an New York Islander for one more year. The Isles resigned doug Weight today in hopes he will continue the development and mentoring of John Tavares and co.

*-> Over the weekend the Phoenix Coyotes reupped Lee Stempniak to a 2 year deal worth 3.8$ million dollars. The Coyotes have added some much needed secondary scoring to be able to keep their momentum moving forwards.

*-> Also this Sunday a signing which CA broke is that the Edmonton Oilers and Sam Gagner have come to terms. The deal is worth 2.275 million per season or 4.55$ million over 2 years. A bit of a rough signing for the Oilers as I still do not believe Gagner has earned that kind of pay increase in his young career.

Ice Scoopz: Saturday Afternoon

Some Saturday afternoon rumors from the golf course.

*-> Paul Kariya has said he will miss this years season due to post concussion syndrome. Kariya is still suffering from that concussion he received and has decided due his health and preparation for the season after makes more sense. Kariya has not publicaly stated that he'll miss this season but its all but been confirmed. Sources have also not ruled out a late season signing.

*-> The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded 2 low level players for defenseman Matt Lashoff. The Leafs have also signed former Buffalo Sabre Clarke McArthur.

*-> Mike Comrie is on the verge of signing a deal, no team has been named yet but its expected to be announced later tonight.

More rumors this evening.

Ice Scoopz: Friday Afternoon

*-> It appears the Kovalchuk saga could be drawing close to the finish line. Sportsnet, Yahoo and ESPN are all reporting an agreement has been reached by the New Jersey organization and the Kovalchuk camp and has been reviewed and accepted by the NHL. TSN however is reporting as of 3pm no agreement has gone through the NHL offices. The contract may be finalized by the Devils but it still isn't official yet. Reports are saying that it may not be until late Saturday before the contract is submitted, reviewed and announced. All the conditions including the length have been met by the Devils so this deal is expected to pass. Ill be glad when this one is all over finally!

Ice Scoopz: Friday Afternoon

*-> The New Jersey Devils have signed Brian Gionta's brother Stephen Gionta to a 2 way deal. Gionta played last season for Lowell the Devils AHL affiliate.

*-> Taylor Beck of the Guelph Storm has signed an entry level deal with the Nashville Predators this morning.

*-> David Spina has signed a 1 year 2 way deal with the St. Louis Blues.

*-> Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League has signed former Phoenix Coyote Petteri Nokelainen to a deal.

*-> Yesterday the Dallas Stars signed defenseman Nicklas Grossman to a 2 year deal worth 3.25 million overall. The deal works out to be 1.62 mil per year.

*-> Ilya Kovalchuks agent has told the Devils Management that they have 48 hours to signed the Russian superstar before he looks elsewhere. While many see this as a scare tactic by the Kovalchuk camp its believed the threat is real. Kovalchuk is sick of the situation and he feels he waited on the Devils and he's also shown tremendous loyalty to the Devils by giving them the first crack. Its also said that Kovalchuk still has a major offer from the KHL club St. Petersburg and also an unnamed club presumably AK Bars. As for NHL offers not very many teams are in the position to spend so very few suitors should surface. The main threat could be the New York Islanders. The New Jersey Devils are trying hard to get the cap space and have been pushing for a salary dumping deal. Bryce Salvador to the Dallas Stars is one known option.

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Noon

*-> The Tampa Bay Lightning added defenseman Randy Jones to their equation yesterday in hopes of adding depth to their backend. The former King and Flyer will be an unrestricted free agent again next season after only signing a 1 year deal last night.

*-> Willie Mitchell has found a new home late last night as well. Mitchell agreed to a 2 year deal with the Los Angeles Kings after sorting through the many suitors. The deal is worth 3.5$ million per year. This signing should have an effect for several teams as the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitols were all looking at Mitchell. It's expect Brian Burke will now attempt to shop Kaberle again to the losers. The Washington Capitols expected deal for a defenseman may also be cooking now as well.

*-> Colin Stuart has signed a 2 way deal with the Buffalo Sabres today.

*-> The Pittsburgh Penguins have told veteran Bill Guerin they will not resign him. Guerin still has a handful of teams looking at adding some leadership and his services to their lockerooms. The New York Islanders are considering bringing Guerin back for another stretch as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers have also been mentioned.

*-> Former NHLer and 1st round draft pick Chris Gratton has received an offer from the Edinburgh Capitols of the British Elite League. Gratton did not play last season at all after becoming a free agent last summer.

*-> Alexander Sugolov has signed with Spartak Moscow after playing the past few seasons with CSKA Moscow of the KHL.

*-> Former Ottawa Senator prospect Kirill Lyamin has left Spartak Moscow for Traktok Chelyabinsk who are looking at making a run this season.

*-> Pavel Brendl is considering an NHL comeback according to Brynas sporting director Michael Sundlov. Brendl who was a 1st round draft pick in 1999 (4th overall) for the New York Rangers had a good season for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod last season with 37 points in 51 games played and has attracted some attention in the NHL. Brendl hopes to try one last time in North America before finishing his career with his former club Brynnas Sundlov told the Swedish media.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Afternoon

*-> Jere Lehtinen is still deciding whether or not to play another season he told the Dallas media. The Stars still have interest in the defensive Finn but only if the price is at a discounted rate. Lehtinen said he'd make a decision on his career next week after he meets with the Dallas brass.

*-> The Atlanta Thrasher management has admitted to speaking with free agent Lee Stemniak as he'd like to add one more forward to the roster. They also said they'd be happy with giving a youngster a shot as well. Stemniaks main interest is still stemming from the Coyotes but a battle over terms is still holding a possible deal back.

*-> The Tampa Bay Lightning have resigned pesky forward Steve Downie to a 2 year deal worth 3.7 million which works out to 1.85 million per year. Downie has been a key part in the rebuilding of Tampa Bay and the development of Steve Stamkos. Stamkos and Downie are best of friends which adds to their already dynamite chemistry.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Morning

*-> Raffi Torres has signed a 1 year deal with the Vancouver Canucks its being reported. The deal is worth 1 million for the season. Exactly what the Nucks need a 3rd line presence after the Kyle Wellwood experiment.

*-> Sabastien Caron has left Gotteron of the DEL and has signed a deal with Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL. This signing should mean Cristobal Huet is heading to Switzerland barring noone claims him from waivers in the upcoming days.

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Evening

*-> Its been confirmed Brandon Pirri has signed with the Chicago Blackhawks.

*-> Enforcer Andre Deveraux has signed a deal with the Chicago Wolves this evening. Last season Deveraux spent the season shuffling between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Marlies.

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Evening

*-> Andrei Zubarov has officially left HK Atlant of the KHL and has signed with the Atlanta Thrashers as previously rumored on Ice Scoopz.

*-> Aaron Ward has hung em up after 13 seasons in the NHL after not garnering enough interest as a free agent this summer.

*-> Patrik Holmqvist of the Nashville Predators has signed a deal this morning worth 9.25 million over the span of 3 years. The Preds will be happy to have their main offensive threat locked in for a good chunk of time.

*-> Free agent veteran Owen Nolan has been skating with his former club the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks are seriously considering the rugged veteran winger its been said as their looking to add some leadership to their playoff struggling squad.

*-> Stephane Yelle formerly of the Colorado Aves and former Ottawa Senator Shean Donovan are both linked to the Graz 99ers of the DEL. Both veterans have been speaking to European clubs but both would also prefer to find a role playing job with an NHL club but do not want anything to do with a 2 way clause.

*-> Prospect Brandon Pirri of RPI is close to a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

*-> Ales Kotalik has been told by Calgary management he will not be bought out by the club. Kotalik is believed to be getting one last look around the league before the Flames are expected to ether burry him in the AHL or a European loan.

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Afternoon

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Ice Scoopz Be A GM Contest. It is now officially closed and I will have the results with my panel shortly. While there wasn't as many entries as expected I was quite pleased with the results especially the creativity. Hopefully next year around we'll get more people willing to step up and show us what they got now that everyone knows what to expect from this contest. I have more plans in the near future for more contests so lots of opportunities to go around.

*-> Yesterday the Atlanta Thrashers announced they signed Brian Little to a multi year deal. Both parties have yet to disclose the terms and contract length but its rumored to be a 4 million for 3 year deal.

*-> The major news sources have finally posted the Cristobal Huet Europe rumors after being revealed last month. For those who don't know Cristobal Huet is working on a loan deal to head to the Swiss league to play out the rest of his contract. While he'd rather stay in the NHL he's doing what's best for the team his agent has said. If all goes as planned Huet will be placed on waivers this week and if cleared he'll head to Gotteron and remove his salary off the Hawks cap hit. Anti Niemi will most likely be getting a call but he has the Hawks where he wants and if he's feeling extra bitter about being let go over a few hundred thousand. Chicago's situation is an interesting one.

*-> Justin Abdelkader has resigned with the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings and Abdelkader came to terms on a 2 year deal, however the financial terms have yet to be released

Ice Scoopz: Sunday Afternoon

I'm back after a few days off for my birthday, luckily nothing major has happened except a few minor signings. A few rumors however are heating up now leading into the Training camp season.

*-> Tomas Kaberle's father has told the Czech press that his son is unhappy with Ron Wilson and expects he will waive his no trade clause for a trade. Kaberle's father also said its unlikely he'll return to the Leafs next season. We all know this one could go ether way. While Kaberle is rumored to be close to his father a lot of the European media and all media for that matter like to text things out of context. I've read the translation of this interview and it appears that he is just saying Kaberle would except a trade if asked. An obvious as most loyal players would for their teams. If a team doesn't want you why would you want to be there instead of moving your career in a new direction? The Ron Wilson aspect of this interview as well is nothing new. Many players have difficulties under Wilson. Kaberle and Wilson have never seen eye to eye and that's nothing new. I think the Leafs will deal Kaberle as long as he's willing as he clearly no longer fits in their plans. Burke may have had an agreement with Kaberle that lead to the Leafs waiting for the right deal past the deadline. Kaberle has been a loyal soldier for the organization so this all fits the bill in my opinion.

*-> The Pittsburgh Penguins will get some added toughness this year from down the highway. Former Philly Flyer enforcer and dressing room leader Aaron Asham has signed a 1 year deal worth 700K. Great signing Asham is a heart and soul player who can help boost the Pens PK and shut down abilities.

*-> While on the Penguins, veteran Bill Guerin has been reportedly told that management will have a decision this week on whether or not Guerin will be signed. Guerin has been loyally waiting for the call from Pittsburgh and has told other suitors the Penguins are number 1 and will wait for them before considering another team or retirement.

*-> The Vancouver Canucks have signed Bill Sweatt.

*-> Tomas Fleischmann is been linked again. The Capitols and the Canucks have touched ona deal for Kevin Bieksa. We know the Caps have told Belanger to wait for a deal before his signing and a source also leaked it was in regards to Fleischmann being dealt for a defenseman. This could be the deal but I've also heard whispers of a Alexander Semin to the Edmonton Oilers for Sheldon Souray and a high pick. A Fleischmann to Edmonton deal is another possibility as it has been in the mills for quite sometime. The Caps need to clear space and it leaves me to wonder if Alexander semins playoffs and large contract could be expendable for a role player in Belanger and a pressing need for a defenseman. However I don't believe Souray is the right fit so we'll have to stay tuned on this one.

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Afternoon

*-> Enforcer Andrew Peters has signed a 1 year 2 way deal with the Florida Panthers this afternoon. Some much needed toughness for the young cats.

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Afternoon

*-> Freddy Meyer has signed a 1 year deal on a 2 way clause with the Atlanta Thrashers to help bolster their defense corps. Good depth signing for the Thrashers.

*-> A trade rumor has started to heat up. Rumors have the Dallas Stars in talks with the Vancouver Canucks in regards to Kevin Bieksa. The deal that's rumored to be is discussion is Kevin Bieksa from Vancouver to the Stars for Matt Niskanen. This one is a head scratcher for me as the Stars are still going through a sale and tough financial times so why would they ship a cheap defenseman out for an expensive one without another cap clearing move? I'd stick with Niskanen.

*-> The Toronto Maple Leafs are rumored to be interested in Patrick O'Sullivan and in deal talks. He should come cheap if that's the case but he isn't the solution to the Buds 1st line center issues.

*-> The Stars and James Neal are rumored to be really close to a deal its being said.

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Morning

*-> Fernando Pisani has signed a 1 year deal worth 500K$ with the Chicago Blackhawks today. Pisani is expected to step into a 3rd line role and replace Ben Eager and John Madden Hawk management has said.

*-> Brendan Morrisons agents has told the Washington media that his client has a few teams biting but nothing major so far. Expects his client will land an NHL job closer to training camp. He said his client will not look to Europe at all as he still has lots of value in the NHL.

*-> Unlike Morrison, Kyle Wellwood is looking at his European options including a major offer from the KHL. Barys Astana is rumored to have put a big deal on the table for the ex Maple Leaf. Wellwood himself has said that he hopes to land a gig but as time runs down Europe may be the best fit.

*-> Marc Savard this weekend told reporters at a golf tournament that several of his buddies have tried to per swayed him to head to Toronto. Toronto is indeed one of the teams he will waive his no trade clause to but yet Boston appears hesitant to dealing Savard to a rival. Judging by Savards reaction it seams like he would welcome a deal to Toronto at the present time. Boston may have triggered something when they recently asked him for the teams he'd waive his clause to. To me Michael Ryder would be the better option to dump via trade or waivers but that's just me.

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Late Afternoon

*-> Andy Hilbert has resigned with the New York Islanders today but this time on a 2 way contract for only 1 year. He's expected to get a good look at training camp before a possible demotion the club said.

*-> Ben Guite formerly of the Nashville Predators has signed a 1 year deal with Columbus today.

*-> A rumor out of New York has the Islanders in negotiations with Anti Niemi. Several rumor pundits have shut down these rumors however saying the Isles management has told them no such thing has happened. I highly doubt the Isles would invest in yet another starter unless they know something about Rick DiPietros health the rest of the league doesn't. Who knows though it is Charles Wang and Garth Snow.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Afternoon

*-> Willie Mitchell is starting to gain a lot of attention the past few weeks and has been flirting with several teams. Mitchell has been training with the Los Angeles Kings the past week but also has taken a physical for the San Jose Sharks to prove he's in game shape and has no lingering effects from his head injuries. His agent has also stated the Mitchell has been speaking to the Washington Capitols as well. The Capitols signing Eric Belanger hinges on a apparent trade of a defenseman and that is believed to being held up by the Caps interest in Willie Mitchell. If that falls through a trade could most likely happen.

*-> Fredrik Modin has admitted to having several suitors including one recent bidder but he has said he's not ready to chose a team yet although he expects to sign a deal with an NHL club this season. He also said Europes not an option for him at this point in his career and wouldn't be a good fit for his family who lives and goes to school in Columbus.

*-> Yesterday Sean Bergenheim signed a 1 year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning to give the Bolts some depth on the wing.

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Noon

Not too much to report as I'm in a seminar but a trade and a few rumors for the morning. I'll have some more this afternoon. Many people have asked me to extend the Be A GM contest by a week as many were unclear about the deadline so if no-one has a problem with extending it by a week the new deadline will be this Sunday at midnight. If you do have a problem feel free to email me. Here's todays news.

*-> The Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning exchanged goalie prospects yesterday. Karri Ramo of the Tampa Bay Lightning currently playing in the KHL was dealt to the Habs for goalie Cedric Desjarden of the Hamilton Bulldogs. Ramo is expected to report to the Montreal training camp this fall.

*-> Raffi Torres is in negotiations with Brian Burke about a potential deal with the Leafs. Burke has admitted to speaking with the winger but remains non committed at the present time.

Monday, August 16, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Monday Morning

*-> It is official Tomas Kaberle will remain a Leaf for the time being. I was sure the Leafs would deal him rather than have a player who knows he's not a priority on the team anymore. While he's not disgruntled yet he certainly will now look into his options come seasons end when he's a UFA. Also he now controls his own fate so the Leafs may lose him for nothing now. Many are saying his UFA status scared away many suitors as well as the availability of Kevin Bieksa and Willie Mitchell. Some reports are saying the Leafs may have deals worked out around Tomas Kaberles no trade clause with his consent but they hinge on Willie Mitchell and where he ends up.

*-> Ilya Zubov is currently considering a return to Ottawa for this years training camp. He's expected to try out for the club but he still has hang ups about being sent to the AHL and would rather head back to the KHL than toil away in the minors. He hopes to make the club on a one way.

*-> Brett Skinner formerly of the Colorado Avalanche has signed a deal in the KHL with Amur Khabarovsk.

*-> Willie Mitchells stock has risen the past few days and he now has up to 5 teams interested. The Detroit Red Wings are reported to have minor interest. The San Jose Sharks have been linked to Mitchell as of late as well adding to the Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitols and the Los Angeles Kings.

Sunday, August 15, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Kaberle Watch 2

*-> The Los Angeles Kings are rumored to be out of the bidding for Kaberle. They've decided to turn there attention to UFA Willie Mitchell it appears. Reports have them also staying away from bidding on Iyla Kovalchuk. TSN's Darren Dreger has confirmed the Kings being out over Twitter.

*-> The Anaheim Ducks have no interest in Kaberle at the present time mainly due to the asking price and his UFA status next summer. The Ducks arn't willing to part with future or their core for a rental. They are currently looking at the remaining free agents for help. Andreas Lilja and Willie Mitchell both remain on their radar.

*-> The San Jose Sharks appear to be leading this one right now with the Columbus blue Jackets close behind. San Jose is reportedly pushing for a sign and trade or a deal involving a clause if he doesn't resign with the Sharks. The Leafs have no interest in such a deal its reported. The Blue Jacket's are reportedly low balling the Leafs with mild offers.

At the end of the day unless a major offer comes through Kaberle may be a Leaf despite Burkes wishes but I still think presonally he'll go as Burke will definately lose him next summer after all of this turmoil.

Ice Scoopz: The Kaberle Watch

*-> As the deadline looms for the Tomas Kaberle no trade clause the speculation has started to run wild. While Burke has told the media that he expects the Leafs to receive the best offers in the last few hours, the offers have still yet to flood in. Burke told TSN today if this is all the offers he going to receive he's going to keep Kaberle. I don't quite buy that as the Leafs have a defenseman too many and besides we all know Burke doesn't like to reveal his hands until the chips are on the table. It is possible he'll keep the Czech defender but realistically he's hoping to get rid of him. Burkes even admitted to be willing to take a future pack, a young player and drafts instead of that 1st line center he was asking for.

The Maple Leafs have been rumored to be talking to the Dallas Stars about a possible deal. Its said the Stars would love to add Kaberle but the Leafs would have to take cap in return. Burke reportedly wants Brad Richards but the Stars are only offering Mike Ribeiro for the taking.

Burke has been linked to the Washington Caps as of late. Ever since the rumor came out Eric Belanger has accepted a deal with the Caps and is awaiting a deal sending Fleicshmann to another team for a defenseman in return the Leafs have been the team rumored. Burke has come out and denied this deal and it doesn't make sense for the Caps ether cap wise.

A rumor came out late last week as well the Dustin Brown had been traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the Leafs for Kaberle but proved false. We do know the Kings would love a defenseman of Kaberles quality to help young Doughty out but I doubt Brown would be a part of any package. Andrei Loktionov, or Brayden Schenn to be the Leafs targets.

The Columbus Blue Jackets need offensive help from the backend but have little in the way of first line centers to offer but could put together a future package easily.

The Boston Bruins star center Marc Savard is currently being shopped and the Leafs know he has chemistry with Phil Kessel. Savard listed Toronto as one of the 2 places he'll waive his no trade clause so this could be a perfect fit except for the fact Savards contract is under investigation and both teams would like to see their star sent out of the division.

Jeff Carter was linked to the Leafs all of last season in the rumor mills. Carter could fill that void up the middle for the Buds but Philly already has revamped their blueline and unless they can dump 2 bodies this one won't work.

A St Louis deal came out last night saying the Leafs and the Blues were talking about a David Backes for Kaberle swap. Backes is a UFA next season and would be costly for the Blues to keep. The Blues could use a body or 2 to help there woeful defense.

Ice Scoopz: Friday Morning

*-> Brian Burke has shot down the rumors about Tomas Kaberle heading to the Washington Capitals. The outspoken GM has said no talks have taken place concerning Kaberle with the Caps but Brian Burke is a lot of smoke and mirrors when it comes to deals. The rumor of Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings for Tomas Kaberle "done deal" was shot down also saying there was zero truth to it. Rumors are now swirling around which defenseman it could be. Sheldon Souray has been linked but it seams unlikely the Caps would send a top 2 player for a disgruntled defenseman who could be had for next to nothing. Kevin Bieksa also has been linked but with Sami Salo injured Vancouver may be forced to keep him. Philly has a surplus of defensemen but next to no cap space. The Ottawa Senators have Brian Lee and Filip Kuba to expend and are looking for some offensive help. The Montreal Canadiens have several prospects ready to go and could be looking to move a body out but it's unlikely the Caps would deal a player to the team that eliminated them so soon. We'll watch this one closely today.

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Afternoon

*-> It looks like Eric Belanger is going to remain a Washington Capitol. Its being reported that Belanger has signed a 1 year deal with the Caps worth 1.85$ pending a deal which is believed to be Tomas Fleischmann in exchange for a defenseman. Ill keep looking into this one.

*-> Yesterday Buffalo signed Marc Mancari to a 1 year deal in which the terms were not released.

*-> The Detroit Red Wings are once again in negotiations with Kirk Maltby. Its believed they are asking him to accept a 2 way deal and head to the AHL till cap space is available.

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Lunchtime

*-> Eric Belanger has admitted he's already signed a 1 year deal with an NHL club but cannot disclose the team until their cap situation is dealt with first. The Toronto Maple Leafs are heavily rumored to be the team and are waiting for the Tomas Kaberle trade to go down but also the Buffalo Sabre's have been linked to the defensive center. Some Ottawa fans have speculated the Sens being in on the bidding.

*-> Speaking of Tomas Kaberle, the Leafs are struggling to find a good deal. Several teams are still tied up in the Kovalchuk debacle and now it appear Anaheim is once again out of the bidding. The Sabres have mild interest but would need to dump some cap first. The Blue Jackets and the Bruins are the only 2 real suitors at the moment. The Bruins have reportedly offered up Marc Savard again but Brian Burke wishes to trade him out of the conference.

*-> Staffan Kronwall of the Calgary Flames wants out. The defenseman is currently on a 1 way 500K$ contract with the Flames but is rumored to be unhappy and is shopping himself in Europe rather than stay in Calgary. Its said the Flames management are trying to trade him back to the East but bidders are few and far in between. Its expected the Flames will try and loan him to a Swedish team to get him off the cap.

*-> Fernado Pisani is shocked at the lack of interest out there and has said he will not sign a low ball deal or any kind of 2 way\AHL deals. He also went on to say he hopes to sign a deal before training camp but if not he will not do the tryout thing and most likely would look to Europe.

*-> Unlike Pisani Lee Stemniak reportedly has several teams biting but he's giving Phoenix the option to retain his services once again. He'd rather return to Phoenix but still is hitting snags with negotiations. The other teams interested are reported to be Ottawa and Florida.

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Evening

*-> The Calgary Flames have resigned Craig Conway to a 1 year deal.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Afternoon

*-> The Toronto Maple Leafs have made Jerry D'Amigo's demands come true. D'Amigo signed a 3 year Entry Level deal with the Buds this afternoon and its reported will claim a roster spot next season.

*-> Montreal has convince another college bound prospect to make the jump to the CHL. This years 1st round pick Jared Tinordi will skip out of playing the College system this season and will suit up for the London Knights. The Habs managed to convince the big blueliner to switch over with out signing a pro contract.

*-> The Columbus Blue Jackets have come to terms with Michael Blunden. He will suit up for one more season atleast for the Jackets, terms of the contract were not released.

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks have resigned defenseman Jordan Hendry to a 1 year deal.

*-> Jaime Tardif has signed a 2 way deal with the Detroit Red Wings today. He'll reported to the Griffins next season and will be used strictly as a depth signing.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Afternoon

*-> Jerry D'Amigo prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs is aiming at signing a contract with the Leafs so he may leave RPI where he currently attends. The young gun only will leave RPI if he obtains a roster spot and has told his agent he will not accept an OHL demotion to the Kitchener Rangers who own his rights.

*-> Big Lou has told the Devils fans he expects to get Kovalchuk under contract soon. He has faith both sides will come to terms again and get a deal done quickly. He claims talks have already resumed and both parties have the same desire, get Ilya in a Devils sweater.

*-> Juraj Simek of Dinamo Riga of the KHL as signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning this morning.

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks have re- signed Nick Boynton to a 1 year deal worth 500K$.

*-> Dean Arsene formerly of the Edmonton Oilers has signed a 1 year 2 way deal with the St. Louis Blues.

Monday, August 9, 2010

Ice Scoopz: Monday Evening

*-> The Ilya Kovalchuk saga has come to a climax....just kidding the New Jersey Devils and the Russian sniper have to go back to square one as the negotiator has ruled in favor of the NHL surprisingly. The Devils are expected to still sign Kovi but will have to try and rework the deal. The Islanders and Kings are expected to be back in the mix but I'm convinced the Devils and Kovalchuk will come to terms once again. Kovalchuk's loyalty is to the Devils after this saga. The only real threat is an offer for the KHL but St. Petersburg has already invested quite a bit in free agency. Expect Kovalchuk to rework a deal with the Devils unless he's truely souless.

Ice Scoopz: Monday Afternoon

*-> The Detroit Red Wings have added Ruslan Salei to their line up. The Belarussian defenseman signed a 1 year deal rumored to be worth 1.2 million.

*-> Teemu Selanne is indeed a Duck despite conflicting reports from the Anaheim press. Teemu signed a 1 year deal worth 3.25$ million this afternoon giving him one more shot. He still maintains that he may not be finished after this season and will continue to take it year by year. The Ducks also have not commented on the possible Paul Kariya signing and still wish to add another defenseman its rumored.

*-> Riley Cote of the Philadelphia Flyers has retired as a player today. The tough guy will however stay with his club to try his hand at coaching. Riley will start next season as an assistant coach of the Philly Phantoms of the AHL.

*-> The Edmonton Oilers have re added Liam Reddox back to their line up after a brief free agency. Reddox signed a 1 year 2 way deal.

*-> The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed prospect Radko Gudas of the Everett Silvertips to a deal.

Ice Scoopz: Monday Morning

A really really slow hockey weekend so hopefully things heat up as the Ilya Kovalchuk verdict will be heard. Ill post the news as soon as I hear anything. However it should be a go and if not New Jersey will find away despite the rumors out there saying both New York teams are going to come forward with offers. If Kovalchuk showed loyal once by resigning with the Devils he'll do it again.

*-> Free agent goaltender David Leggio of TPS has signed a deal in hometown Buffalo for the Sabres. He'll report to the AHL its expected.

*-> Vesa Toskala formerly of the Calgary Flames is rumored to be on the verge of signing with Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League today.

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks are rumored to be trying to push goaltender Cristobal Huet to Europe. Sources close to the team are saying that the club is trying to move the gosalie but no luck with his contract. The Hawk believe it or not still have interest in Niemi its said. A team in the Swiss league is rumored to be prepared to take Huets salary on in a loan but the goaltender and his agent are determined to keep him in the NHL at all costs.

Ice Scoopz: Friday Late Afternoon

*-> The Edmonton Oilers have signed Martin Gerber to a 1 year deal. A random signing for the Oilers but I believe this has a lot to do with the Khabibulin charges.

Ice Scoopz: Friday Afternoon

Thanks to everyone whose so far posted their teams, I like the direction CA is taking it with the depth. While it doesn't have to be too deep with press conferences and what not, I expect a few changes and signings to make things interesting. Keep up the good work guys and pass the word along. I will be posting the same Be A GM Post over again for anyone whose missed once the post disapears off the main page so anyone participating already can ignore it.

I also added a poll on the sidebar so feel free to participate as well.

*-> Teemu Selanne will return for yet another season with the Anaheim Ducks. The Finnish Flash is set to sign a 1 year deal in the near future with the Ducks. The Finn also told the media that he had been pushing hard for a reunion with Paul Kariya as previously mentioned on Ice Scoopz. Paul Kariya had been waiting for a Selanne decesion and now it appears he'll be turning down offers from Pittsburgh and New York to head to California.

*-> A rumor surfaced this morning that Maxim Afinoganov will be signing a 5 year deal with SKA St. Petersburg. The rumor isn't quite true but has some real elements to it. Maxim does have a deal on the table for St. Petersburg, he still has hopes for the NHL. He did the exact same thing last season as he signed in Russia then left once the Thrashers came to him with an offer far less of his Russian wage. Afinoganov will most likely have an NHL release clause if he does sign that deal as TSN and other sources are predicting.

*-> John Madden has signed a 1 year deal worth 1 million dollars to join the minnesota Wild next season. Good pick up by the Wild as he fits the team mold to a t and will be able to provide that leadership that was lost with Owen Nolan.

*-> The Tampa Bay Lightning are speaking to Kirk Maltby about a 1 year deal. The Lightning want to add depth for the second half it's rumored although they may run into a log jam of forwards next season.

*-> The Ottawa Senators have signed AHL defenseman and former Canadian Andre Benoit to a 1 year deal on a 2 way contract.

*-> Andrei Zubarov of HK Atlant is rumored to be close to a deal with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Afternoon

*-> David Hale to the Sens has been officially confirmed while they also added AHLer Francois Lessard to a 1 year 2 way deal as well.

*-> The Nashville Predators have been linked to goalies Anti Niemi all this week and today Dave Poile has come out and told the Nashville media that he has not spoken to Jose Theodore about a possible signing. Poile did not however say it was a no to the Predators looking for a goalie. It wasn't mentioned nor commented on so it could go ether way but I doubt the Preds would chase a goalie after letting Ellis go.

*-> Anaheim isn't done yet remodeling their backend. Its reported the Ducks are still looking for a defenseman and Kevin Bieksa and Tomas Kaberle keep popping back up. They also have been speaking with former Duck Ruslan Salei about a possible return. Its rumored the Belarussian Dman is waiting it out before signing the a deal that's on the table with Dinamo Riga of the KHL.

*-> Its reported former Minesota Wild winger Petr Sykora is close to signing a deal with a Czech team. He reportedly has 2 suitors in the Czech liga while several more over in Russia. Its said he still has hopes for a team in the NHL but isn't willing to play a healthy scratch or a minor league role.

*-> The Scatchard deal was a 2 way deal as well I forgot to mention.

Ice Scoopz: Thursday Morning

*-> According to sources the Ottawa Senators signed David Hale to a 1 year deal on a 2 way clause. The Sens have still to finalize the contract but its done on paper. The deal is worth 675$ K. Great pickup for the Sens. Hale is capable of logging minutes and at that price he's a steal.

*-> Carey Price's agent has told the Montreal media this morning that although the negotiations have stalled Montreal is not looking at adding an insurance policy. He claims the Habs have no interest in Anti Niemi or any other goalies from around the league and has faith the Habs and Price will get a deal done soon.

*-> Detroit has locked up Darren Helm to a 2 year deal worth 825$ K the first season and a million the next.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Lunch Hour

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks have signed veteran defenseman Jassen Cullimore to a 1 year deal. The Hawks were extremely active this morning and also signed minor leaguers Evan Brophy, Nathen Davis, and Hugh Jessiman to 1 year 2 way deals. Chitown also added goaltender Hannu Toivonen to add depth to their line up.

*-> On top of the handful of players signed by the Blackhawks they added Russian prospect Igor Makarov. Makarov signed a 2 year deal on a 2 way clause. Last season he suited up for SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL.

Ice Scoopz: Wednesday Morning

*-> Dave Scratchard has signed a deal this morning with the St. Louis Blues. The deal is rumored to be a 1 year deal. The terms have yet to be released.

*-> Yesterday Jon Sim resigned with the New York Islanders to a 1 year deal on a 2 way clause. Jon Sim played in majority of the games last season for the Isles.

*-> Jamal Mayers is close to becoming a San Jose Shark today. Its reported the Sharks will offer the former Flame a one year pending his physical this afternoon.

*-> Its official the Detroit Red Wings and Mike Modano have brought the American forward home to Michigan. The Wings and Modano agreed to a 1 year deal late yesterday afternoon.

*-> Mike Weaver has signed a deal in Florida, the terms have yet to be released.

You Be The GM Contest

After a long heated argument with a close friend about what a certain hockey GM should have / should be doing for a certain Canadian hockey team, I've decided to start this contest for everyone following Ice Scoopz. We all think we can be the man in charge but really could we? Its a tough job. While fans and owners expect results instantly, a long road of hard decesions comes before victory. Being a GM is a stressful position with lots of demands and huge shoes to fill.

Now it's your turn to fill those shoes! Since everyone thinks differently I thought it would be interesting to see everyones take on their favorite Canadian team and see if they have what it takes to be a National Hockey League General Manager. So heres the contest, each person entering gets to pick any Canadian team and take over from August 1st on wards right up to training camp. I wanna see what you would do to your team. Which free agents would you sign? Who would you trade? Who would you buyout? Which prospects would you bring up? Who would you fire? What would your lines look like? What players would you extend training camp tryout offers too? Every move a GM could make is in your hands. Show us what your team would look like going into the upcoming season. Use whatever approach you think you team should be taking for the next season whether its a rebuild for the future or a 1 year run for the present. I want to see what your make up would be for your favorite Canadian team. Please use detail I want to see the reason and method behind the madness. It doesn't have to be a book but enough logic to make some sense.

It wouldn't be a contest ether without free shit. I'll be judging this contest with my panel so there will be a prize for the winner. What kind of prize you say? Well a cool t-shirt of your favorite Canadian hockey team. The real prize however is being crowned the best wanna be GM. The judging will take place a week after the contest ends giving you time to review all of your fellow rumor fiends teams and leave positive criticize. I'm looking for the team that makes the most sense / the best fit. The team with the most logic behind it and at the same time keeping the theme of being realistic will win the contest. Creativity is also a major factor so use those noggin's.

In the next few days I'll have a new category setup in the Forum for contests and BE GM will be where your to post your teams. Yes that means you have to sign up for the forum. If you need help or have any more questions please feel free to e-mail me at ice_scoopz@bell.blackberry.net and I'll answer you inquiries. The deadline for this contest will be Sunday August 15th at midnight. Goodluck

Here are the rules:

1. Salary Cap Friendly - The cap counts in this one so stay under the cap max but over the cap minimum. The cap max for 2010-2011 is 59$ million and the floor is 43 so keep that in mind when wheeling and dealing.

2. Trade Realistically - When it comes to trades obviously the Pittsburgh Penguins won't trade Sidney Crosby to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Jeff Finger. The same goes for free agency, a player that is still in his prime and made 2 million last season most likely wouldn't except a deal for 500K$. The more realistic it is the funner it is. I was going to put a limit on trades but I figured some of the 6 Canadian teams do need a shake up but that being said realistically you cant deal 50% of a team without serious damage. Just put your feet in the other teams shoes, think to yourself would this make sense for the other end? The more rumored player the better.

3. Free Agent Frenzy - When signing free agents remember your RFA's count as well so get them locked down. Any of the remaining free agents are up for grabs so their at your disposal. Anyone who had not signed before August 1st is still avaliable and any players signed, waived or boughtout after August 1st do not exist on your team. I'll even accept any European free agents that have NHL release clauses so do your research.

4. Canadian Teams Only - Please stick to any of the Canadian teams as most of you are Canadians following this site and it makes it easier limiting it only 6 teams. anybody can pick any team this isn't first come first serve as we could have an entire contest of Ottawa Senators. 1 entry per GM so only 1 team post, if more than one is posted because you have some time and this is up your ally, the 1st team posted by that user will be the entry.

5. Show Your Work - I wanna see some reasoning behind your changes to your club. With each move or change made a little explaination would be helpful in determining why you made the decesions you did, especially in the judging part as well. The more detail the better.

6. Musical Chairs - You may alter any players position to another but explain your purpose in doing it and keep in mind some players play the positions they do for a reason. Moving a center to the backend may not be a smart move but switching wing could be done without much trouble. Also if a player is more suitable in your opinion or has played a certain position is the past thats alright with me as well.

7. The Future - Feel free to sign any prospect you feel could make an impact, any prospect your team owns is in your tool shed to use. I'll make an exception for any prospects with commitments. You may sign them unless they specifically said before August 1st that they did not want to sign with your club. bring players up from the minors as well, we won't worry about players that have to pass through waivers ether.

8. Be Friendly - I expect everyone participating to leave comments on others teams but please be respectful. You may question a decision and point out issues but be nice about it. No name calling or bickering please, just friendly debate.

9. Stick To The Board - Use the Forum to post your team, please don't e-mail me or post on the main site. The forums there for a reason and the whole idea of this is to get more users signed up and using it regularly.

10. Finalize - The last call for teams to be posted is August 15th Eastern time no teams will be excepted after that deadline to be fair, even if you have a doctors note. I have a final say to the judging so please don't question it, you have your chance to question your fellow scheming GM's once they post it so don't stress me when I post my rankings of the top 3. You can take it out on me when I post each of my versions of the 6 Canadian teams.

Have Fun And The More That Enter The Better!! Goodluck!

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Afternoon

*-> The Toronto Maple Leafs are rumored to be up to something. Noise around Toronto has the Leafs attempting to make a move. Mikhail Grabovski is a name that keeps being linked to a move. Grabovski hasn't attracted much interest around the league since Toronto signed him to that expensive deal but there still is a couple suitors looking for quick fix offense up the middle. The Columbus Blue Jackets have taken a look at Grabovski and he may be worked into a Kaberle deal as a cap dump its being said. The Jackets now have a better chance at landing the blueliner as the Ducks appear to be out of the mix after signing Sutton. The Nashville Predators have also been linked but will the possible arrival of arch enemy Grabovski effect the recently acquired Sergei Kostitsyn. The Leafs also have the possibility of just waiving him in hopes he gets claimed but Burke isn't a lose for nothing kind of guy. Jeff Finger is another name that keeps popping up as a soon to be waived Maple Leaf. So the so called noise in Toronto could be something as simple as a demotion. We'll know soon enough.

*-> Willie Mitchell formerly of the Vancouver Canucks has been speaking the Washington Capitals about a possible deal. The San Jose Sharks are also rumored to be interested but are still cautious about his concussion problems.

*-> Shaone Morrisonn has been signed to a 2 year deal worth 2$ mil roughly. The Buffalo Sabres acquired the former Capitol yesterday evening.

*-> Tim Kennedy of the Buffalo Sabres who was waived yesterday was rumored to be on the verge of being bought out but it appears now his agent claims it was all just salary cap house cleaning to get his number off the cap. The Sabres his agent claims has no intentions of a buyout.

*-> Nikolai Khabibulin is being shopped by the Edmonton Oilers in hopes someone will take a risk on the former Stanley Cup winner. The Oilers are rumored to be trying to rid themselves of a potential PR situation if Khabibulin is convicted of his DUI charges. There isn't interest around the league yet, but maybe once the dust settles at the start of the season. That may be too long for the Oil though so a buyouy may be coming shortly.

Ice Scoopz: Tuesday Afternoon

Busy morning this morning for me and also the hockey world. Here what was missed! Stay tuned later tonight I'm unveiling a brand new contest for all of Ice Scoopz loyal fanbase. I'm excited to get this one going.

And here's your news for the day..

*-> Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers is expected to sign an entry level deal with the Boston Bruins today. Seguin was this years second overall.

*-> The Anaheim Ducks have found their minute eating defenseman in free agent Andy Sutton. Sutton signed a 2 year deal worth 4.70mil$ to help the Ducks backend.

*-> Anti Niemi isn't attracting much interest so far and now Paul Holmgren of the Philadelphia Flyers has said his team will not pursue the former Hawk. Some are saying the Montreal Canadiens could be a new option with Carey Price holding out for a long term deal averaging 4 mil a season.

*-> Mike Modano has been reported by the Detroit Press to be on the verge of signing with Detroit this afternoon. Its been rumored all summer but could be coming to a close soon.

*-> Glen Metropolit has sign a deal with Zug of the Swiss league as previously rumored on Ice Scoopz. The deal is a 2 year deal.

More soon including some Leafs news.

Ice Scoopz: Monday Morning

*-> The Chicago Blackhawks have walked away from Anti Niemi's 1 year 2.75$ arbitration award making him a free agent this morning. They then turned around and signed Marty Turco to a 1 year deal worth 1.3$ million as rumored. The San Jose Sharks, Philly Flyers, and Washington Capitols all are rumored to be interested in Niemi. Not liking this one too much. I like Turco but to lose Niemi for nothing is disappointing. The Hawks should have tried a sign n trade.

*-> Erik Johnson of the St. Louis Blues has signed a 2 year deal worth 5.2 million overall.

*-> Brendan Witt has officially been bought out of the 2 year contract worth 6 million overall. Witt now becomes a free agent.

Trade! Atlanta -> New York Rangers

*-> The New York Rangers have finally shed the contract of Donald Brashear this morning as he was packaged with Patrick Rissmiller and sent to the Thrashers in exchange for center Todd White.

Not too sure why the Thrashers wanted ether player but it does clear some roster space up the middle for younger talent such as Eric ODell. Great move for the Rangers though. They avoided the buyout and got a talented player in return.

Ice Scoopz: Sunday Morning

*-> The Tomas Kaberle situation has started to heat up across the league but the Leafs and GM Brian Burke are still being handcuffed by the Ilya Kovalachuk fiasco. It's not just the New Jersey Devils and Ilya who are eagerly awaiting this chapter to close so they may focus on the upcoming season but up to 6 other teams are tied closely to the results of the hearing on Wednesday. The Leafs have roughly 2 weeks to deal Kaberle before his no trade clause kicks in. While Brian Burke maintains his stance on not having to trade Kaberle and only will if the situation is right, there are too many signs of a possible deal to ignore. For 1 the Leafs already approached Kaberle about listing his no trade clause at the trade deadline. Number 2 the Leafs have 7 defenseman not including Kaberle, even with a Jeff Finger buyout and no promotions it still leaves 5 defenseman and number 3 Tomas Kaberle has been telling European newspapers all summer long he expects to have a new team by summers end. So all signs point to deal but as previously stated above a deal hinges on the Kovalchuck fiasco. There are many teams who are all tired closely together while playing this game. Heres a brief break down of the players.

The Toronto Maple Leafs - Toronto is obviously tied down in this one as Brian Burke had interest but didn't pull the trigger hoping to get more value out of Kaberle. Burke thought if he out waited the Kovalchuk deal there would be more interest from around the league from the losing teams. The Leafs would like to move Kaberle to the West so they won't have to worry about running into him in the future.

The New Jersey Devils - The Devils have the biggest reason to be in this as they are waiting for Ilya Kovalchuk to be finalized as a Devil or told to rework a deal for the Russian sniper after the results of the hearing. They have no other ties other than the Kovalchuk connection but if the deal goes south, they may find themselves in a hole in Kovalchuk's loyalty isn't what it seams and another team jumps in the mix with a better deal.

The Los Angeles Kings - The Kings were the leader in the Kovalchuk bidding for the start of the summer but after the terms kept sky rocketing the Kings pulled the plug instead of find themselves in a Chicago blackhawk like situation in the near future. The Kings also have interest in Tomas Kaberle. They wish to upgrade at defense and held take some pressure of their young's backs. The Kings have a lot of youth and prospects to offer up but it may be their draft picks that could lure Toronto into a deal.

The Boston Bruins - The Bruins were rumored to be involved in talks with the Leafs about Tomas Kaberle but now it appears the subject of talk appears to be Marc Savard. Savard who has agreed to lift his now trade to ether the Ottawa Senators or the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto has interest in the center and would love to reunite Phil Kessel and Savard. The Bruins are stuck as the Leafs their possible trading partner continues to shop Kaberle looking for that number 1 center with the Marc Savard deal on the back burners till they figure out what the possible return for Kaberle is incase it may be the center of their dreams and the cap hit.

The Columbus Blue Jackets - It's no secret the Jackets need help on the back end, Columbus has struggled to provide offense from the point since their existance in the league. Columbus has Anton Strahlman and Fedor Tyutin to help spark offense but both remain incosistent and a true franchise defenseman could help their ailing team. Kaberle fits the bill and GM Scott Howson has told the media he has indeed spoken to the Leafs inregards to Czech defender. The Blue Jackets also have interest in Vancouvers Kevin Bieksa.

The Anaheim Ducks - Now thats the Ducks lost a major minute consumer on the backend after dealing James Wiesnewski it's expected they'll take a run at Kaberle. The Ducks could use a legit pucking moving defenseman and they've been linked to the Leafs since last season. Many are saying a Bobby Ryan for Kaberle deal is on the table but I doubt the Ducks will part with future star like Bobby Ryan.

The Vancouver Canucks - The Canucks are tied to this scenario as they too have a sought after defenseman. Kevin Bieksa has been linked all over the league with the Nucks recently signing Dan Hamhuis and with the better option Tomas Kaberle out there it's going to be hard to get the best value. Mind you now that Sami Salo is out for 3 months the Vancouver canucks plans may have been altered.

The Edmonton Oilers - Finally Edmonton's tied into this because of their situation with Sheldon Souray. The Oilers have having a hard enough time selling Souray to teams even for free but the losers of the Kaberle and Bieksa bidding could turn to Sheldon Souray as a consolation prize.
